Side effect nausea and/or vomiting, and can be serious...
By Steven B on Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024
I was told by my physician that at my age, 70, and with my health, a multivitamin would be beneficial. I chose Centrum Men 50+ and I didn't realize it was the Centrum until this morning. I had noticed this queasiness, to the point of almost vomiting, as well as stomach distress, but figured maybe it was a bug. This morning I took my other pills, only 2, for BP and Prostate, and I have been taking those for a while. I didn't notice the Centrum had hidden itself so I'd missed taking it. Being a while after my single egg breakfast, coffee and water, my stomach was pretty much empty by the time I took it, by itself with water. 15 Minutes later the nausea came in waves, and was more pronounced and I struggled to not vomit. I then Googled side effects for Centrum, and ... nausea and vomiting is a major and minor side effect, and it says under major could be dangerous. Wow, a multivitamin? I had taken vitamins, other brands, over the years with no issues. But stopped when I'd heard they can cause harm. Peoples bodies process the multivitamins differently having different needs, different diets and environments, so don't ever assume one size fits all, even if it says it is for your sex and age group. And coming here to write this I read a few reviews before posting and the reason I had quit years ago was a mention why someone was complaining, they were not happy whatever Centrum they ordered didn't have Iron. Well folks, there is Iron in our food, there will be more Iron in your food if you cook in cast iron, and the body tries and conserve Iron since it is so essential to life, is essential to our blood processing oxygen. The poster/complainer did not mention which Centrum as I mentioned, and I could not determine their sex... yes their sex. Iron supplements are recommended for some women of Menstrual and Child Bearing years because of low levels caused by blood loss or requirements for the fetus. Men, their bodies are still designed to conserve Iron, could be that what men did, of course not being menstruation nor child bearing, carried high risks of bleeding, which hunting and battling others would. Today that is not the case for most men, and an Iron supplement, or a multivitamin with Iron can cause harm, as much as any good if not more so. If I am wrong I apologize, but it does make sense and does explain some multivitamins not having Iron... there is a reason or they would likely include it since it is not a rare element, nor costly. I had a relative die, actually die, from taking more vitamins, minerals and supplements than his body could process properly. His autopsy showed a buildup of heavy metals in his body. His heart showing the lower half was effectively dead before he died. At least that is how it was explained to me, it was the metals in the multivitamins and other supplements he had in the actual old style physician's bag he always had with him. Yes, he was a hypochondriac and it killed him. The one time I saw inside his bag he had literally hundreds of bottles of drugs, whether prescription or over the counter I will never know, but it was not normal or healthy. Now that I am on this topic, I had some inflammation and was advised by a non-professional to try Echinacea. It worked, or seemed to. Being an over the counter supplement I figured it had to be safe, and could be taken for prophylactic/preventative purposes. Well it isn't, at least for my body. I was having problems I couldn't explain, and through process of elimination with my physician, and then reading its side effects it was decided I should stop taking it immediately... and my issues went away, or resolved themselves with no other intervention. So the lesson I have learned, but apparently did not follow with Centrum is that you should always consult your doctor, and always read about the side effects. The advice for Centrum, for me, is to only take it on a full stomach, or if that doesn't work then if a multivitamin is really needed try other brands. Drugs are never one size fits all.
