So Far SO GOOD! -essentially perfect.-
By Netmon on Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2020
First off. Fully aware this was a re-furb as, currenty, CLEARLY stated in the listing. Can't speak to what it, the listing, may have said previously. Super happy so far. Arrived fast. Well packed. Factory-box packed inside much bigger AMZ box with "padding". (it was sliding around a little), one of the 4 inner styrofoam end-caps had busted up a bit but still immobile within inner box.Key Item points: (pros)1.) Refurbished by Yamaha. (not AMZ or other 3rd party) Factory sealed Yamaha box.2.) Appeared new. not so much as a finger-smudge let alone a ding or a scratch.3.) Original remote? YES. The listing includes the disclaimer: "Box and accessories may be generic". SO I was holding my breath on that little, especially ref the REMOTE, but, Accessory pack was ALL new. Sealed Yamaha Original.4.) Really appeared brand new. There were just 3 ways you could tell it wasn't new. The box. Yamaha but generic. 2. no protective-adhesive clear plastic on the front of the unit. (yet it was crystal-clean not the slightest nick or smudge). 3. on the back, pasted over the original serial number was a small sticker that read "refurbished item" and under that a new serial #.5.) I set it up in about 10 minutes. 5 speakers + sub, two HDMI devices IN, HDMI out to TV, (never cracked the printed manual), power on: Video and Sound, 5X5. Good to go. OPTIONAL Personal preference-tweaking via-remote/on screen menu took longer but it was ready to rock without that. IMPORTANT: IF you don't consider yourself "experienced" I DON'T recommend skipping the manual. I comes with a (new) printed manual and you should set it up with that in hand.6.) Right off the bat-(10min-in) Sound was better than the econo-grade Sony this was replacing. Upon Parmetric-EQ tweaking, sound was MUCH better. (= to or better than my Aventage 830) Video I swear was better. The Sony had the most current HDMI standard, this was at least = to if not, it seemed 1st-DVD, better.I did not use the "YPAO" auto-adjust for the speakers so I can't comment good or bad on that. I do manual. The test-tone is a big help in highlighting which speakers need more or less. Levels are super easy. EQ is optional. Sounds great out of the box. If you care the manual (7-band) parametric EQ is feature-rich to say the least. A little intimating for a novice I think. the good news is you can HEAR what what's happening in real time as you change things. (have something playing). When you hit the options menu the playing-video will be partially or fully hidden, but the audio is unaffected.7.) Network, connecting to my wireless router was super simple. sub five minutes. (never touched the manual) 3 or 4 minutes after completing this the unit spontaneously prompted for "firmware update available". which I let it do. Said "up to 20 minutes to complete" it was closer to 5. No muss no fuss.I DO have some Bluetooth devices... ain't played with that yet. I could "SEE" my desktop PC on the wireless router but getting IN to it was not no-instructions-intuitive. (access denied)Cons:1.) The remote. Not a biggie, but I liked the two-tone silver and black one that came with my Aventage 830 MUCH better. This one is ALL black and in the dark it's a lot harder to tell what's where. The GOOD news is the old remote works on this unit!. ("Aventage" is Yamaha) so by sticking with Yamaha I now have a back up remote.2.) The only other con that's sticking out to me at the moment is the USB input can't be used for Video-from hard-drive input. OR if it can it would be only on a stick, (like 128gb-ish-or-less), no "real" external USB HD's. I connected a 1tb drive and got "no device" or some such.so FAR no issues with the "HDMI" board another reviewer was going on about. As I previously commented on his review, before I bought this, I googled what he was talking about and got essentially 0 hits. Will update if this fails in weeks or months to come.So far I am happy ears-guy.

interesting receiver but maybe not refurbished
By senator29 on Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2020
Refurbished products are a gamble and this one leaves me scratching my head. This replaced a Kenwood from 2000 so yes it was a big upgrade. I do get enjoyment out of it but also some serious headaches. I am using the Kenwood speakers from 2000 and the setup can honestly sound amazing. The subwoofer I got from a friend, it is a JBL I think. It sits behind the TV and stand, can't see it without moving furniture.I have the receiver hooked up to the first gen Nvidia Shield TV and I know the Shield has some wonky issues that may be part of my problem but have not found any evidence online to confirm what is wrong here. Can't beat the price for what I did get but I don't trust that this was refurbished properly. CEC controls are all over the place. Sometimes it recognizes the Shield (and displays Shield) other times it just shows Player and I can't control the volume with the Shield remote. ALSO!!!! Sometimes the receiver kicks on with the Shield, I don't know which device causes it, but they come on randomly and play audio. This is typically after you put the Shield to sleep while it is playing a video. I have things set where the receiver can turn on/off the Shield and the Shield can turn on/off the receiver. There are times that the receiver and Shield turn on randomly on it's own and it does not play audio because nothing is playing on the Shield. That is why I don't know which device is at fault.Sound quality can be good and even excellent. But I don't know why the bass is so dang loud. Also the various codex you can choose from sound drastically different in volume when the volume setting is untouched. There is not a feature called "normalization" but there is a feature that is suppose to equalize volume. I do not think it works at all. That is really sad because I bought this to normalize the audio coming from the Shield as audio varies greatly across various apps and even across various videos within apps. The sound volume and quality between Dobly Surround and NEO Cinema is drastically different. I am new to these codecs but I don't think they should sound so different. The receiver knows what speakers are connected and adjusts the virtual surround accordingly but I don't know this unit is doing it right.I used the microphone it came with to auto tune the receiver, called YPAO. It is a joke. And I did mount the microphone to a tripod and sat it where my head would sit. It shows my speakers as 14 feet away which is about right but then shows the center channel being 6 feet away and the subwoofer being 19 feet away. Very inaccurate. Speakers and center channel should be about 14, sub about 16.Yamaha, as well as other receivers, have a sound enhancer that can tune the audio to sound like you are in various conditions like a stadium or town hall, Cinema 3D DPS I think it is called. There are quite a few of these presets to choose from. They all sound like horse poop. I don't know if my ears just don't like it or if the processing engine is messed up on this refurb. I just don't get it. They override the surround sound codec used too which I don't like.I currently have a 3.1 setup. Will have 5.1 soon and want to try Dolby ATMOS with the down firing speakers. I will not be trying Multicast as those speakers are seriously over priced.Last but not least, the sheerness rating is a 1 star, it should be 0 as you cannot see through the receiver. Amazon??? Really???
