Flavor not quite right

The pretzels were excellent. The rainbow pouches have a weird flavor. I can definitely taste the vegetables they add to give the colors (such as beets). But, more importantly, both the original and rainbow goldfish tasted stale. They were consumed several months before the sell by date, so there shouldn't have been a freshness issue. However, everyone in my house (where we all eat goldfish several times a week with our lunch) thought the flavor was off and tasted stale.
