The Meater is Worth it's weight in Prime Rib--and More!
By Placeholder on Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024
I am almost confounded by the excellence of this product. Almost never does a product's claims live up to the real world. The Meater is an exception. I prepared prime rib for a special family dinner, and the Meater allowed me to feel in control throughout the process. Not only does it provide the internal temperature of the meat, it also give the temperature of the air within the oven or whatever heat source is used. I could check the cooking progress so easily using the app on my phone. Anyone who invests in meat should have a Meater. It is hands down the best product for the job. I say this without any compensation.

Work in progress - disconnects on grill shelf
By T. Bihn on Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2019
It seems to be a work in progress. I had a connectivity problem and their ticket system could use improvements. They advised that it could be a small film on the ambient probe interfering with charging and to clean it off. After 20 hours in the cradle, encountered a completely unrelated problem where it reports 50% charge but is actually fully charged. I found their number in the responses to 1 star reviews and talked to them. They are very personable and ready to help on the phone and informed me that the 50% issue is a firmware bug, so I proceeded to place in the grill and it seemed to maintain connection. I'll try again tomorrow when I am doing a meat that will be in for a couple hours to see if it can make it through. So far, 3 successful short cooks totalling 72 minutes. the last cook time was 22 minutes before it ultimately failed. I upgraded my 1 star review to 2 for now as they are responsive over the phone and their slow responses seem to be mostly in their helpdesk ticket system.New company, growing pains.Update 4/29/2019: It turns out the range is fine with the no obstruction (like a grill lid being closed). I would have thought my ceramic Kamado Joe Classic I would not have been an issue since ceramic is not conductive, but sure enough, the range is really bad with the lid closed. They do offer a rerouting option in their app so I'll keep my eye out for a used tablet to put it on wifi during cooks. It's not the end of the world, but I think the range spec is a little disingenuous considering the typical usage for something like this will have the lid closed. For the fact it DOES allow me to monitor a cook on meat in a rotisserie and the fact they added the app, I'l upgrade to 3 stars.Update 5/16/2019: Well, it turns out it disconnects at various times with my Samsung tablet sitting on the grill shelf...Customer support is reluctant to admit there is an issue with my meater probe, stating that the ceramic grill is acting equivalent to a faraday cage of copper mesh would act on a signal with a metal gasket. In fact, it's a ceramic grill with a felt gasket, so should be plenty leaky, especially considering I sat a Samsung tablet line-of-sight through the gasket from the food on the top grill grate, through the felt gasket to the tablet sitting next to that. The last time I checked, felt was not electromagnetic and would not attenuate an RF signal. But nonetheless, the company believes this is normal for their meater probe. Based on what I've learned from this, I assume all meaters will probably experience disconnection issues. Be sure to order through Amazon and test right away in the grill so you can return if you are not satisfied with the disconnection issues I have faced. They offered to give me a "subsidized" Meater block repeater to use instead of the tablet. If that fixes the disconnection issues less than a foot away from the probe through ceramic and felt, I'll update here, but as of this writing, they have not committed to allowing me to return the block and getting a replacement Meater if this does not correct my disconnection issues. As I'll be away on business in a couple weeks, I will hold off on buying the meater block until mid June and will update this review with the results.
