Every bit as easy as the reviews said. Quality product.

This fixed my leaking bonnet issues. If you haven't already I suggest that you go to YouTube.com and search for the Febco product repair video. This repair literally took me 4 minutes. I also think I know why some of the reviews mention breaking or leaking even in areas that are not prone to freezing. The kit comes in a bag with the bonnet, poppet, o-ring, and some grease. There are no instructions, but like I mentioned above just search YouTube for the repair video. It couldn't be easier. There are a variety of reasons this could fail including but not limited to normal wear and tear, freezing, or as is covered in the YouTube video, if you open the pressure side too abruptly and allow the poppet to slam into the bonnet. These are plastic pieces, and you should be glad they are. If they were made of a more robust metal material than the damage from freezing (you shouldn't allow it to freeze with water in it) or excessive pressure or whatever other else could damage the brass housing instead of the sacrificial plastic that is easily replaced. In short, this is a necessary design feature. If you for some reason are still skipping the YouTube video then here are the instructions. Obviously cut off the water supply. Remove the bell bolt, un-screw the old plastic bonnet, remove any broken pieces if there are any floating in the housing, remove the old poppet. Now, use the included grease and apply a smear of grease to both o-rings on the bonnet and poppet. Use the remaining grease for the metal guide pin that the poppet slides on. Place the new poppet in the housing, then screw the new bonnet into the housing while ensuring the guide post is inserted into the poppet. Hand tight is all that is necessary. You just need to compress the o-ring on the bonnet so don't use a set of hogs and break the plastic. Once all the new internals are inserted, bolt the bell housing back on. Now here is the key, open the output of the device, and SLOWLY open the supply. If you simply slam pressure on without allowing the water to slowly build and press the poppet into place than you are unnecessarily stressing these pieces. If you do this right you SHOULD see some water come out of the bell housing until the pressure is fully applied and closes the poppet into the bonnet. Easy-peasy. $35 fix, and I imagine if you don't let it freeze, and then don't slam pressure into the housing when you re-prime in the spring this should be a very long lasting fix. Great value, and my wife doesn't have to pull the hose around the house any more.

Would like to replace only the bonnet
By Lisa on Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021
I've had these break on me twice now, in each case, it was only the bonnet that broke. Would like to be able to save a few bucks and only have to buy the bonnet, not both the bonnet and poppet. However, it's an easy DIY fix to have an operational backflow valve again.
