(UPDATED Jan 22, 2017) Excellent Evaporative Humidifier, I Feel Better In Winter, Maintains Humidity Well, Get Replacement Wicks
By Stephanie Sullivan on Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2017
I really like the Vornado Evap2 Whole Room Evaporative Humidifier. My brother had a large Vornado model that lasted and lasted and this model looks like it's got the same solid build quality. While quite compact it does a great job humidifying my living room/kitchen area making the winter much more comfortable. The instruction booklet *is* worth reading for the best results. The Vornado is a *evaporative* humidifier - it pulls dry air through a wick (sometimes referred to as a filter) which is kept moist by water from the removable tank. Moisture is added to the air through natural evaporation and then gently blown into the room. I find the resulting humidification is better for me than other options like ultrasonic humidifiers. This is not like the cheaper and more common ultrasonic humidifiers. They eject a stream of visible vapor with a transducer. I have had poor luck with those and the ones I've had have frequently failed, even using distilled water to avoid mineral problems. As with any humidifier, plan on some maintenance of the Vornado. The MD1-0002 wicks used to transfer water into the air should be replaced periodically. How often depends and mine are still good after 3 months. Hard tap water may cause mineral deposits and in some environments mold or other nasty stuff might start growing eventually. It's easy to see and feel how the wicks are doing when removing the tank, so take a moment to check them and have a spare set on-hand for when they will be needed. The design is very well thought. The tank is easy to remove with one hand and the large opening in the bottom makes filling it very easy in the kitchen sink. I fill mine every morning integrating the tank fill with my morning routine. Replacing the full tank is just as easy. The controls are located on the top where air is blown out. They are intuitive to me but confirm operation with the instruction booklet. I keep mine on auto and let it take care of the details. The Evap2 can be placed on the floor or a table. Mine is on a small table. My thinking is keeping up off the floor will keep dust intrusion down. When I first set it up I went through 3 tanks in a little over 24h to get the humidity from bone-dry to comfortable. Since then I go through about 1 tank a day to maintain comfortable levels. I run mine on auto and I barely know it is there. If I ever need to run it on high the fan becomes and becomes noticeable, but the slower speeds are very quiet. I would not consider it having a loud noise level. even on high. Running the Vornado keeps my home much more comfortable. I didn't know how uncomfortable the dry winter air was until I humidified making this money very well spent. In conclusion, I'm VERY happy with the Vornado Evap2 humidifier. It does an excellent job quietly in a very compact form factor. I didn't know how uncomfortable I was until the Vornado humidified the air and made me feel much better. It's a case of getting what you pay for and Vornado delivers. That's a 5 star performance for me. UPDATE Jan 22, 2017: My Vornado is in it's second season of humidifying the dry winter air. So far it's worked perfectly and I'm very pleased. I cleaned it thoroughly and put in a fresh wick before firing it up this winter. Now at the 1 year point I'm still fully satisfied and mine has had not problems.

Good. Could be better.

I have used water/fogger humidifiers for a while but this is my first evaporative. First the pros: it is high quality, the container is easier to fill than my water ones, I love that you can use an anti-algae/bacteria supplement and that it has a filter. My water ones are such a pain because I constantly have to clean them in fear of them putting bacteria etc.. into the air. Last, no mess! The water ones end up making everything around it damp/wet and your furniture if you run it high. The cons: the fan is very loud. That doesn't really bother me. I keep it in my living room and fan noises are soothing to me. But if a loud fan would bother you, don't get this model. It runs through water quickly. You can change the setting to adjust how much humidity you want (there's an 'auto' option- you set the level of humidity you want) so you could set it low and it wouldn't run water so quickly. Part of my reason for having it is for my plants. I have a lot of tropical plants in my living room and they crave humidity so I set it high. Last, I like the feel of the air with the water/fogger ones more than this one. I love the feeling of breathing in clean moist air and I don't feel that with this. It does work; I have a hygrometer that measure humidity in the air and it says it's working but I prefer the feeling of the fogger.

Very convenient humidifier, but annoyingly loud on high speed.

Because I’ve had other Vornado products and I needed a decent humidifier, I took a chance with this in spite of mixed reviews. It works quite well, maintaining the humidity level in both my living room and dining/kitchen area at a pretty consistent 35% when set on its lowest setting of 40%. Refilling its reservoir is very easy, without more than a few drops of spillage when the reservoir is removed for filling. That only has to be done twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Its quality of construction is good. My only reason for only 4 stars is that when it switches automatically from low fan speed to high fan speed, the high speed is annoyingly loud. Low speed is hardly noticeable, but it won’t quite keep up with the humidity level on low. So most of the time, it switches between low and high every few minutes. It would be a better product if it had an intermediate fan speed. I notice that others have complained about the noise as well, especially when used in a bedroom. If I used it in my bedroom, I’d set it on low and not on automatic.
best humidifiers on the market.

This is the best humidifer I've owned (and I've owned several). For starters, it's evaporative, which is far superior than ultrasonic. Because it's not ultrasonic it has no risk of minerals being dispersed in the air and breathed in, and white dust building up on all your stuff. Ultrasonic units also don't come with a fan to push the humidity around, and so I noticed with a hygrometer that while an ultrasonic unit might shut it off at a set humidity, if i measured the humidity on the opposite end of the room it'd still be low. The Vornado also comes with a wick that's pretreated to be antimicrobial, helping ensure no bacteria or mold builds up in your unit. It's hygrometer that it uses to automatically shut itself off is extremely accurate as per my testing, and it will cause the air in the entire room to be the precise set desired humidity. The fan is also powerful (like all Vornado fans), but not very loud. It also humidifies quickly, bringing my bedroom up to the desired humidity in less than an hour. Finally, the design for removing the water canister and refilling it is the best I've ever seen. It's just one giant tube with a huge opening that you can pull off its base and replace with ease and with no leaking. Vornado makes excellent products and this is no exception. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for this top of the line unit. While the antimicrobial wick is probably all the safeguarding you need, also do yourself a favor and purchase a few Kaz PC-1 Protec® Cleaning Cartridges to help ensure you never disperse mold or bacteria back into the air. My only thing I'd point out is I also own a Vornado Evap1 and Evap3 and this one is the trickiest to refill because it has a water container with a curved edge so I can't sit it down and fill it. If you are considering between the three models, go with the Evap1 or Evap3 instead. That being said they all work fantastic and this one still deserves 5 stars in my opinion. Finally, I'd like to point out this review is 100% voluntarily written and I was not given a unit for testing or anything like that. I'm just a dude that loves this product. I have no reason whatsoever to be biased.
like other vornado products I own

A lot of folks that have reviewed this item don't realize this machine is a wick or evap style humidifier, they work differently from ultrasonics, so do some homework. We have ours in the first floor of our apartment and it kicks on whenever our forced air heat starts blowing. This thing, like other vornado products I own, are far superior to others I've owned over the years. The fan on auto does tend to get loud when it needs to run hard but is not so loud that it drowns out our tv. Windy days in our place have it run the hardest, but calm days you don't even know it's on. It holds a lot of water and the filling is simple, although it has tipped over in my sink due to its design. I check it about every 2 days here in the winter in pa and it's been fine. We went on vacation once for the weekend and came home to it empty. When it's empty the fan runs hard and loud so you know it needs a fill. It even pushes enough to help with our upstairs bedroom. Cleaning is a breeze. No akward spots to try and scrub. The thermostat seems pretty accurate but I don't have a hygrometer to test. My winter alligator skin has been held in check by this little guy. I'm going to get one for our bedroom next season.
Good. Could be better.

Runs very quiet on low fan. Good for larger bedrooms

Great for 200 - 300 sqft bedroom. Ratings say up to 500 sqft but this is probably on high fan speed. Honestly the high fan speed sound is loud. Wouldn’t want to be in the same room as it. But the low speed is pretty much whisper quite. These are so much better than the ultrasonic humidifiers for air quality. I use for three months in the winter and usually change filter once per season. Simple electronics. A timer would be nice but not necessary as you really want to run it dry if you don’t plan on having it on 24/7. I’ve had an evap3 that I run for three months straight for the last 10 years and it runs like new. I would highly recommend this unit for larger bedrooms or smaller living spaces.
Poor quality, inaccurate settings.

After a couple months of use in a ~500 sq ft room: The humidity settings are useless. I have two humidity monitors and the actual humidity vs. the setting is off by at least 15%. Set for 50% and barely achieves 35% with constant use. The filters don’t last more than a few weeks with filtered distilled water. The water tank will last about 12 hours regardless of setting. Which further shows the setting are BS. High setting is loud. I have to turn it down during calls or virtual meetings. It’s cheap plastic and the water tank doesn’t fit securely. Overall I would not recommend nor would I buy again.
Works pretty well for some rooms, some quality issues with parts being assembled wrong.

I've been using this for a few days and it works pretty well for small rooms. It's compact, looks nice, and fits in tight spaces. Keeps my ~300sqft bedroom from drying out with the heat on. It's not really too loud even with the fan on high. My issues with this unit are: 1) The humidifier keeps running even when the reservoir is empty. So you have to manually check it to refill. My last humidifier just shut off when the water ran out. 2) The cap I received had the gasket installed backwards into the cap, as you can see in the attached photos. The effect of this is that when I fill the reservoir it just spills out the bottom since there's effectively no gasket to make a seal. So I can only fill up the reservoir ~50-60% and carefully insert it into the machine to avoid water spilling everywhere. I've contacted their support via email and will adjust my review pending their response. Update: I fixed the gasket myself. You can pop it out after taking the rubber gasket off the spring and then insert it properly. A little annoying but not unfixable.
Does not achieve 60% humidity.

This should be a great humidifier, but it isn't. With a fan this powerful, an 18x12 room should achieve 60% humidity saturation fairly quickly. However even after running it all night it never gets close to 50%. The so-called built-in hygrometer does not accurately measure the humidity in the air. But what really bugs me is that the filters last only two to three weeks. I just put in a replacement filter which is a genuine filter for this unit. In less than 2 weeks, it already smells. This is going to be a very expensive proposition if I'm to use this for 4 or 5 months out of the year in New York City. By the way, we have very soft water here, so there should be no problem with getting a month out of the filters. Anyway, it is what it is. And a smaller room it might be just perfect. But you also have to understand that the fan is quite loud. If you leave it on continuous, the fan could function like a white noise generator, so there is an upside if you like that.
Good quality, easy to clean, but needs a middle setting.

This humidifier works very well and I appreciate that the tank is so easy to clean (hole is actually big enough to get a hand in & scrub the inside). My only complaint is the wide difference between ‘high’ and ‘low’ (there is no in/between setting). The high setting fan speed is so loud I can’t hear if my child cries during the night, and the low setting (while very quiet) doesn’t add much humidity to the room. The high setting does provide a good level of white noise (as well as good humidity) if that’s what you’re looking for. And, realize my situation is pretty specific, but I can’t have something running in my room so loudly at night that it prevents me from hearing my child who sleeps across the hall.
