Great value for the money

This decaf and chicory isn't as acidic as straight decaf, and it's so much cheaper. I like my "coffee" strong, and when brewing a pot in my old school Mr. Coffee Maker I typically have to hit the dark brew and add an extra scoop into the basket to make my coffee strong. With CDM, if I put in 7 scoops, I can add 7 cups of water, and it's still strong.I switched to chickory decaf mix because my stomach couldn't handle the acidity. This mix is smooth. Other more finely ground and even smoother brands do taste a tad better BUT they're twenty cents an ounce more expensive. For the price, I'll stick with CDM.Here's a tip for my fellow former five cups of coffee a-day addicts: Put one scoop of full-caff coffee into this blend, and you'll have one strong cup of coffee a day but dosed over several cups. It'll keep that caffeine pick-me-up going but over a longer period without the shakiness.

Hard times coffee

CDM is a blended coffee using roasted coffee beans and and chicory root. Chicory-blend coffee is a historical accident, born out of emergency, not desire. In the South, people would roast a blend of dried chicory root and coffee to stretch out supplies during periods of war, high tariffs, or just plain hard economic times. Roasted chicory root was plentiful and cost little in comparison to imported coffee beans. Once coffee beans returned to the docks and prices dropped, chicory coffee sales tanked. But history has a way of repeating itself. With today's persistent inflation and supply shortages, people are trying chicory-blend coffees once again. As to the taste of chicory coffee, that's highly personal, of course. I would describe it as deceptive. It makes a drink that is smooth in body, yet bitter (note that it's almost always served au lait). It gives ordinary low-end consumer coffee the appearance of a rich dark roast coffee laden with oils. But the aftertaste is thick and tenacious - chicory coats the mouth and palate, and is not easily rinsed out.CDM is one brand of chicory coffee, but there are several out there. Personally, I think the French Market and Cafe du Monde brands are better than CDM, which is heavily roasted, extremely dry, and coarse. Because chicory is such a dominant flavoring, there is no point using high quality coffee beans (none of the chicory blend coffees currently on the market use premium beans, or anything close to it). So, if you're a 'super picky' about your coffee, CDM is not what you're looking for.
