Great upgrade, beats Maglite LED!

I originally purchased the Maglite LED upgrade for my 2D Maglite based on several reviews, here and elsewhere. Have to tell you, I was disappointed with the Maglite brand LED upgrade. Didn't put out much more light than the original bulb in in the flashlight. So much so that I took it back and purchased this one on Amazon. This is a much better LED, so far. It is much brighter than the Maglite, not sure yet about longevity. Several reviews recommend simply buying a new Maglite with the LED already installed. That may be a good idea, but I can't see wasting a perfectly good Maglite. I've had my light for several years now, and with this new upgrade, should have it for several more years to come. I carry it in the car under the driver seat, so I can use it as a self defense item, also. I may purchase an additional 2D Maglite LED to store under the bed for home defense. I would always recommend reusing an item, in this case, upgrade an existing Maglite with this LED vs. landfilling. However, if you don't have a large Maglite, go ahead and buy the LED version. Don't waste your time or money with the Xenon, incandesent, halogen, etc. variations. The LED is the way to go. With the savings in batteries alone, it will pay for itself many times over the life of the flashlight. Glad I purchased it and will highly recommend this to all my friends and family.

TerraLUX LED conversion for MAG-LITES

Having already owned a 2nd generation LED MAG-Lite I was eager to give this conversion a try. According to MAG-Lite the 2nd generation LED is rated at 104 Lumens. The TerraLUX TLE-6EXB is rated at 140 Lumens. This Lumen rating is a bit of a quandary. You would think that the rating of 140 Lumens would be somewhat brighter than 104 Lumens but it isn't. I installed the TerraLUX LED in a 3 D cell MAG-Lite that is close to 20 years old. I had already upgraded the bulb to the best that MAG-Lite has to offer. So while I expected a significant increase in light output, there is no comparison between a true LED MAG-Lite and this TerraLux conversion. The TerraLUX LED did increase light output compared to the incandescent bulb but this is no apples to apples comparison. It still is a cheaper conversion for older MAG-Lite but is an apples to oranges comparison. The real LED MAG-Lite puts out a blue white light that far outshines the TerraLUX white LED. The first thing I noticed was the TerraLUX LED is offset from center where the LED in the MAG-Lite is centered. Both have the same black/shadowed area until you get to the finest focal adjustment. I have a long straight away in front of my house and the LED MAG-Lite far out shines the TerraLUX LED conversion. So if you have seen the real 2nd generation LED MAG-Lite don't expect this conversion to be on the same playing field. I have never owned another flashlight brand except genuine MAG-Lites from the single AAA Solartaire all the way up to 3 D cell MAG-Lites with the exception of a recent purchase of a CREE 3 AAA 140 Lumens to mount on my tactical rifle. IMHO there just isn't a better flashlight than a real MAG-Lite. To summarize, if you really need a long distance LED flashlight buy only real LED MAG-Lites. The TerraLUX LED conversion is a good upgrade for older MAG-Lites, Just don't expect this conversion to put you in the same playing field as the real thing. So I rated this conversion 3 stars, almost a 4 but the color of the light and the light output is no where near the real thing. Would I recommend this conversion; yes just don't set your expectations to high. This conversion will give you better light than an incandescent bulb and really does improve battery life.
