Not exactly cheap at $10.00 but does exactly what it should

This is a really nice product that offers adequate protection for bare bulbs. Very easy to install, and very sturdy once mounted. I have read in other reviews where people said they weren't sure it could take direct hits from a basketball. Maybe not if the ball is thrown right at it. Mom always said, "don't play ball in the house." If your basement sees this kind of use, you need to buy the metal cage fixture that is much sturdier, but also MUCH more expensive! (Another option would be this product, which I have at the base of my basement stairs, which have a tighter overhead clearance. Leviton 9860 Keyless Compact Fluorescent, Energy Star qualified Ceiling Lampholder with 13W Bulb and Bulb Guard, 120W, 250VAC ) As far as it's depth regarding CFLs I think this depends more on how tall your ceramic or plastic fixture is. The cage itself is 6" tall, so measure the distance from the top of the fixture to the bottom of the bulb to see if it will be completely inside the cage. Looking around my basement, the necks on my fixtures range from 1/2 to over 1" tall. I have this on one of the shorter fixtures with a 100-watt equivalent Sylvania CFL which, at 6 coils, is a very tall bulb. It's at least 1/2" inside the cage bottom, getting full protection from everything except jamming a broom handle straight up the opening. Making the cage taller would only make it something that taller people might hit their head on in a standard-height basement. Even though I think the mark-up on this cage is probably pretty high, this is the best price I could find on them, and I'll be ordering more to protect the lights in my basement and attic.

Broke after walking into it a few times
By Daniel Solnit on Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024
I have bare bulb fixtures in my shed that are at head height, so I'm often hitting my head on the cages a few times, I walked into it hard enough to break the plastic - with just my head, not a ladder or anything harder. I guess I need the metal version...
