Television takes a lot of grief, have you noticed? “Television is poisoning politics!” “Television is coarsening the culture!” “Television is making our children stupid!” (The next time you hear someone say that last one, take a good look at her and evaluate whether her kids’ stupidity might not have a genetic component.)
And then there are those people who are always telling you they don’t have one. “Oh, I don’t watch television,” they say, as if they’re living some monastic life of the mind, and spend their free time sitting quietly, reading Herodotus in the original Greek, or listening to the birds and learning their songs, when really they just mean they watch all the same crap as you, but on Hulu.

Sorry, tube-hatas. This is the mass media age, and I’m going to enjoy it. That means, obviously, keeping a biggish TV set in my main living space. But it also means keeping several smaller ones—like this Vizio 22-incher—in my bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, study, sun room, laundry room, cedar closet and garage.

The plain and simple truth of the matter is that television is a modern marvel, and whining about it is whining about progress. That doesn’t mean people won’t do it, of course. There’s always going to be some Donald Downer moaning that too much TV “shortens your attention span” and “desensitizes you to violence” and “diminishes your impulse control.” But when I run into someone like that, I usually just tune him out after a few seconds. And then punch him in the mouth.
