Cinematic for the People
Tell you the truth, when those guys grabbed me off of the streets of L.A. and threw me in that van, I was expecting the worst. But one 28-hour helicopter ride later, I was ensconced in North Korean luxury in the fifth-least-rat-infested high-rise in Pyongyang. I’ve got a fridge stocked with acorns, a full library of juche ideological classics, and running water for up to 25 minutes every day. I can’t stop listening to their fabulous state-run radio. (Literally – you can’t turn this thing off!) Say what you will about Kim Jong-Il, the man knows hospitality.
After my long frustrating career trapped in Hollywood, it’s terrific to finally have the freedom to pursue any film project the Beloved Leader thinks up. And in his infinite generosity, he’s provided me with my very own Sylvania HD Camcorder. Sure, I have to get my own 8GB SDHC card (sold separately), but still, that’s more than any big-shot producer was ever willing to give me.
So I’ll be putting its 2” display, 720p resolution, and simple one-touch operation to use showing that North Korean cinema is capable of producing movies right up there with anything from Mongolia, Albania, or Haiti. Lensing is slated to begin right away on The Triumphant Melody of Collective Cobalt Smelter #47, an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza that captures the passion and intrigue of cobalt smelting.
After that, I’m signed on for The Blood of the People’s Heroes Shall Drown All Reactionary Elements, a 13-hour actioner about North Korea’s conquest of Europe. This epic true story is so little-known, even I had never heard about it! Dear Leader’s given me a full 11 days to shoot that one, so I’ll have plenty of time to conjure that trademark Shelman magic.
And I’ll do it all with my new Sylvania HD Camcorder. Every time I pick it up, I’m moved to tears as I consider Kim Jong-Il’s incredible selflessness. I guess he can afford it, though. After all, he invented the Sylvania HD Camcorder. You’d think, after inventing the helicopter, the bookmark, the chalupa, and the tennis racket, he’d run out of inspiration eventually, but not Kim. Looks like ol’ Sheldon Shelman’s finally found the perfect benefactor! How ya like me now, Harvey “Restraining Order” Weinstein?
