Purple: full-fledged member of the visible light spectrum, or bastard child of a drunken dalliance between blue and red? Unless you’re a Minnesota Viking, a preteen girl, or Prince, chances are you don’t wear a lot of purple. We can’t recall ever seeing a purple house. No country uses purple in their national flag. There just aren’t many situations where it works. But it's better than pink.

Leave it so Sony to prove that purple doesn’t work for MP3 players either. They may say their Walkman NW-S705F Digital Music Player is “violet”, but purple by any other name is still pretty damn vile. Fortunately, the idea is that you listen to it, not look at it, so the 2GB of built-in flash memory, active noise-cancelling headphones, OLED display, and sturdy design go a long way toward overcoming the purple stigma. An optional cable (not included) will let you rip your cassette tapes or vinyl LPs to digital files, a feature which pleasantly suprises us. So what if this Walkman player will clash violently with every outfit you own? Some people are above such superficial concerns. Not us, but some people.

About the best we can say about its unfortunate hue is that at least it’s not pink. You don't want to be one of those sad, lonely Wooters carrying around the rosey-pink mp3 player, do you? (Our apologies to said lonely Wooters, but hey, you saved a sawbuck for your shame.)
