They’re headphones…that play music…but block noise?
So I hate the noise of my morning commute, therefore I buy some Philips Active Noise Canceling Headphones. Then the headphones block out the sounds that annoy me, but they also play music. So the music is not blocked…? Freshman Philosophy is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.
Okay, so they push music in, but they also keep sounds like the subway wheels screeching out. Oh man, I feel like one of those guys from Socrates’ cave; everything I’ve ever known is now called into question.
Why not make glasses that only block out negative stuff I don’t want to see? What about making a sweater that blocks cold air when you’re outside but reverses when you come in to let hot air out? You’d never overheat again!
But what are the philosophical implications here, man? Assuming a gal had gone through her whole life thinking that the background noise of riding the bus, taking a subway, or just trying to ignore her shrieking children was NORMAL, would she not resent and fight the person who showed her truth?
I’m being dragged from my cave!
