One gig. That’s all you need, suckaz! It was enough for Tin Man’s Tonsils.
My old band, Tin Man’s Tonsils, was pretty much Ypsilanti’s first Zydecore act. We really had something for a while there. We were a perfect storm. Lightning in a bottle. A perfect lightning storm, in a bottle. Like anything that’s beautiful, it couldn’t last. Before we knew it, Fate grabbed that bottle by the neck, broke it across the bar, and started brandishing the jagged end at me and my bandmates.
One gig, that’s all we played. We were too advanced for the audience, I think. Their minds were blown. They couldn’t handle our sound. Still, it’s embarrassing to be told to stop playing.
Luckily for me, I recorded it all, from our tune-up and sound check to the moment they pulled the plug on us. I cut the show up into individual tracks, loaded it up on my Philips MP3 player, and I can relive that afternoon—that wild, heady, afternoon of sonic experimentation and total artistic fulfillment—any time I want.

Tin Man’s Tonsils’ only public performance was a bold expedition into uncharted sonic territory. It was a psycho-transformative happening. It was the show that rendered all future rock shows unnecessary. And it was cut short by a provincially-minded sound man unwilling to accompany us on our musical test-flight to the center of the mind on the grounds that we hadn’t “tuned” our “instruments.” And that we couldn’t “play” very “well.” And that a few of us “lacked” any “natural rhythm.”
Oh, well. Genius is rarely appreciated in its own time, is it?
