All In The Palm Of Your Phone
So when Palm named their Treo line of phones, were they trying to make a “palm tree” reference, for some reason? Like this, see: Palm Treo 650. It’s sorta like “palm tree 650”, right? But why would they do that?
I mean, yeah, everybody loves palm trees, they’re living symbols of tropical languor and decadence, sure, whatever. Nothing says “you’re living the good life” like a palm tree in the front yard, even if that front yard is in a run-down trailer park 42 miles inland from Jacksonville. But what does that have to do with this compact mobile phone’s email, organizer, messaging and web access features? That palm tree/mojito/sunscreen vibe seems antithetical to hyperproductive features like Bluetooth technology, a built-in MP3 player, a camera that supports video, and a full QWERTY keyboard.
Maybe the freedom of the Palm Treo 650’s unlocked GSM (which lets you use it with any GSM 850 MHz, GSM 1800 MHz, GSM 900 MHz or GSM 1900 MHz service provider – ignore that Cingular logo) has some vague connection to the palm tree’s connotations of leisure and luxury, but that seems like a stretch. The first call we make on this thing will be directed to Palm’s marketing department. We just have to know: palm tree or not palm tree?
