A Date With Your Real Family
MST3K was snarky when snarky’s only home was late-night public access. In the days when the Internet was little more than a dream in a Defense Department white paper, Joel and his sarcastic mechs could drop Fugitive Alien and Kim Cattrall jokes faster than a server full of BBS nerds. They did more to liven up the sleepy 1990s than any grunge moper or stained blue dress, and we’re honored to ride even a tiny corner of their coattails. No, we’re not worthy. But they gave freely of their brilliance anyway, that we may feel superior to the squares who don’t get all the jokes.
Available here three days before you can get it anywhere else, Mystery Science Theater Vol. XVIII eviscerates the unsettling Euro-cheese of Jack Frost, the dopey dinosaur hunters of Lost Continent, the celestial stupidity of Crash of Moons, the sun-blanched tedium of The Beast of Yucca Flats – plus four limited-edition posters. You’ll laugh, you’ll wince, you’ll marvel that they stayed funny enough to make it to an 18th DVD volume without a non-gut-busting moment.
And then you get two more volumes: XVI, with four films ranging from the immortal The Corpse Vanishes to the jolly Santa Claus, plus a Tom Servo figurine and four more posters; and XVII, whose four films run the gamut from the impossibly square The Beatniks to the remarkably unfrightening Blood Waters of Dr. Z.
That’s twelve episodes in all, plus a pile of tchotchkes, to remind us that without MST3K, we’d all still be using the Internet to swap ham-radio diagrams. As Homer Simpson said, “They’ve got the Internet on computers now,” but it was born in a little studio in Minneapolis.
