Amazing Grace, how sweet the spot that saves wretched putts like yours. They say nothing is truly idiot-proof, but the MacGregor Bobby Grace V-FOIL MOI putter busts out all sorts of engineering trickery in its Quixotic quest to straighten out your short game. (By the by, you also might want to start laying off the Woot wine by the time you reach the back nine. Fat, drunk, and five-over-par is no way to go through life, son.)

Like all the greats, MacGregor makes it look so easy. Start with a brilliant design by golf-club auteur Bobby Grace. Take a solid block of aircraft aluminum (ask a neighbor to borrow one if you’ve run out). Mill it into a V-FOIL shape, with an angled bottom for reduced drag. Add a beryllium copper face insert, copper-tungsten weights to put the center of gravity behind the ball, and whatever other stray members of the Periodic Table you can wrangle. Top it off with a center shaft for high MOI, and -

What’s that? You don’t know what “high MOI” is? The letters stand for “moment of inertia,” which helpfully reveals nothing about what it actually means. It’s the way a golf-tech geek (they do exist) would say that the head putter head won’t spin on its axis (i.e., the shaft), so it’ll meet the ball straight-on and your putts will start dropping and you’ll start winning and you’ll keep winning and a kingdom of peace, brotherhood, and low scores shall reign evermore.

Or maybe it won’t. There’s only so much even Bobby Grace can do, after all. Bobby Grace putters may be the most popular line on the PGA tour that doesn’t pay players to use them, but that doesn’t mean it can take your baloney game and turn it into sirloin steak. Take heart, though: even if the MacGregor Bobby Grace V-FOIL MOI putter doesn’t win you a green jacket on the links, you can probably re-sell it and use the money to buy one.
