Well, circumstances are completely different for the modern human. Now the warm glow of the fire-pit has been supplanted by the cool glow of the LCD monitor. But plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose, as somebody must have said or else we can inexplicably speak French. The human animal still has rhythm in his funky soul, and an instinctive need to express it in the form of dope beats.

Fortunately for modern man, there’s M-Audio’s Make Music Now software. Now anyone can make music, without having to spear and skin a giant sloth first.

This program’s got over 3.5GB of professionally recorded loops that you can cobble together and manipulate. You can browse through different styles and instruments until you find the combinations that you like best. And it’s super easy to use. It’s basically as intuitive for a Silicon-Age human to assemble songs in Make Music Now as it was for our ancient forebears to slap the ol’ mastadon-hide.

Basically, the point is that even though the milieu of primitive man was almost totally unlike ours, echoes of his world still reverberate inside us. Like him, we don’t want to work; we just want to bang on the drum all day.
