Just the thing for da crib, you know

Let’s face it, lamps have been slacking off for years. When’s the last time you heard of a lamp doing something new? Lamps are all like: “Oh, I provide light. That’s my thing, see.”

Yeah, OK, great. Except what if we all refused to take on new responsibilities? What if we all decided we weren’t going to learn new skills? It’s a whole different universe out there in the competitive global marketplace now, and everybody has to be willing to adapt, to expand his role. Hey, sorry—sometimes that means taking the initiative to pick up some new duties that weren’t in your original job description.

Except nooo, not lamps. Lamps have been coasting on their “core mission” of illumination for decades. What’s the last innovation lamps made? The gooseneck? Hey, no dis on the gooseneck, it’s great. But it’s 2009 already. You have to compete or die.

So kudos to this iHome lamp for being an iPod speaker dock too. That’s the kind of go-get-’em attitude we like to see in housewares. You’re going to be hearing more from this lamp, you can be sure of that.

For example, as soon as we get it set up on our desk, you’re going to be hearing Flo Rida’s “Low” from it.
