T.H.A.N.K.S.
This country has always loved acronyms. Ever since World War Two, which, as we all know, is when history actually started, we’ve been awash in NASAs and CIAs and DODs and IBMs. Heck, even the friendly laser started out life as an acronym. Yes, back in the day, everyone wrote out all those dots like it was some Jack Kirby super team, but at some point, a brave tech writer decided that enough was enough. That’s why and how L.A.S.E.R. became the friendly proper noun we know today, and that decision is what opened the gateway for a dotless SPECTRE, SWAT, SHIELD and basically every bill that Congress really wants to pass as quickly as possible. And that same decision also lets us write reasonably regarding this refurbished HP p6510f Quad Core Desktop.
For example, what if we were to say that the HP p6510f Quad Core Desktop has 4 gigs of R.A.M. inside? Does that really look like we’re talking about Random Access Memory? No, it looks like we don’t want a five year old to overhear our discussion about sheep. And the built-in C.D. and D.V.D player with LightScribe technology? Written traditionally, it looks like the Invisibl Skratch Piklz got hold of a Tammy Wynette record. Which might actually be pretty awesome but not for reasons of grammar.
Also, consider T.R.O.N. Or should we have written it “T.R.O.N..”? Or should that sentence have been “should we have written it ‘T.R.O.N..?’” See, we haven’t even finished saying the movie title and already there’s going to be sixteen pages of debate about how we’re destroying the laws of punctuation. If acronyms were still written as they once were, that whole franchise would still be dead in the water! No critic wants to do three hours of grammar research with a deadline looming!
But there’s still more. Like what about the irregular 802.11b/g/n wireless L.A.N. and the Windows Home 7 Premium 64-bit O.S. and the ample U.S.B. ports? Or what if you want to buy a 23 inch monitor that just happens to boast a full H.D. L.C.D. screen? Or what if you want a a 25 inch monitor or a 27 inch monitor with H.D.M.I capabilities? And you might be thinking the built-in 750 gig hard drive should get a pass, just like the friendly-looking 15-in-1 Memory Card Reader, but did you know they were both S.A.T.A.? Or should that be “both S.A.T.A?” See, you guys don’t know either. Well, okay, some of you do, but let’s face it, a few of you just refuse to accept your own ignorance, and that brings the language down. It’s tacky, people. It’s just plain tacky.
So that’s why we give you a round of applause, nameless tech writer of yore. Without your bold and decisive action to reshape the acronym, we’d still be talking like morse code and stuck in a world of confusion, turning on each other regarding the proper way to write “U.F.O.s.” Really, should that “s” get an acronym dot or a punctuation dot? Is this the secret reason why “Project Blue Book” hired so many English majors? But now, thankfully, we can just write “UFOs” and move on. And it’s a glorious, glorious world because of it.
We don’t know your name, you beautiful, sweet, world-changing soul, but we certainly thank you, and we hope that you know how your actions made our world a better place. This HP p6510f Quad Core Desktop is dedicated to you, a stranger that made a difference. Period.
