This HP Deskjet is “Energy Star compliant.” That means it runs on just a little juice. Now, that in and of itself is no big deal. We heard pythons only eat twice a year or something like that, because most of the time they don’t use any energy; they just sit there.
But the F340 doesn’t just sit there. It prints, it copies, it scans, and all at a high standard of performance, while consuming little power. To demonstrate the difficulty of this engineering feat, we ran an experiment in our office wherein we restricted one of our interns, Casper, to a daily ration of just one mini-pack of pretzel sticks, half a can of V-8, and all the water he wanted.
To make it fair, we only asked Casper to do the things our HP Deskjet was doing on its own low-power diet. So we had him copying pages from the newspaper, printing out our funniest email forwards (longhand), stuff like that.
At the end of the week-long trial, it was clear that Casper is pretty worthless as a copier/scanner/printer. He eventually became so lightheaded and weak that the documents he printed out showed a wavering, unsure hand—and instead of copying the documents we provided, he would feebly scrawl the names of foods he wanted. Or sometimes just groan them.
The experiment succeeded, though, in demonstrating what a clever contraption the HP F340 is. It ran like a champ all week long, printing high quality color and black-and-white documents on plain paper, legal paper, cards and envelopes, transparency film, labels, photo paper—and didn’t once call the police or file an OSHA grievance, unlike a certain ex-intern.
