OK, OK, before you start in on the voodoo doll: we hate to whoop up on you with the rebate stick twice in the space of two weeks, but seriously…a Hitachi LCD Entertainment Projector for a mere five hundred bucks after rebate? It would be downright unneighborly of us not to make this offer. And if we are not neighborly, we are nothing. Nothing!

Everybody’s hip to the Hitachi vibe when it comes to camcorders, so it stands to reason that they’d be able to make the jump to projectors and lose nothing in the translation. Sure, it’s compact and affordable, but for once those terms aren’t just euphemisms for “puny” and “cheap.” A 3-panel light engine sends the image through an exclusive Hitachi glass lens for a crisp, brilliant picture, whether you’re watching at 480p, 720p, or 1080i. That ol’ Hitachi magick is fully present and accounted for.

The all-important black levels are fully tweakable via Hitachi’s 8-step gamma adjustment feature, without messing with the overall contrast. Just fiddle with the gamma until you find the right settings for your viewing environment, and prepare to tumble into the stygian depths of the EDPJ’s darker regions. It’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.

Unlike whiskers on kittens, rebates are not among our favorite things. But come on, getting this thing for five hundred bucks is an absurdity, a farce, an act of sheer lunacy. Besides, what’s a little paperwork next to the majesty and wonder of the Hitachi EDPJ32’s awesome high-contrast screen image? It boils down to, like, a hundred bucks for filling out a few forms. You’d have to own a casino to make such easy money.
