Startled out of his lover’s arms, Mr. N sprung up from the couch and tried to straighten his clothes.
At least he didn’t burst in here five minutes later,he thought sulkily. “Hello, what’s this? A robot spy? Hiding in the drapery or suchlike, I suppose? I thought the entire building had been scanned for bugs.” His paramour lay silently, staring at the scene.
“Not that kind of robot,” Hargreaves corrected. “Near as we can tell, this is the kind of robot that moves around and has a head and arms and everything. A real robot.”
Mr. N knew he should take this a little more seriously, but the sight of his lover reclined on the couch, the slender torso swelling into curves in all the right places, stirred his animal passions. National security could wait. “Preposterous. The enemy hasn’t got the kind of expertise that can program a robot to navigate hostile territory.”
“That’s the most frightening part. They say this robot can be controlled from anywhere in the world using a simple Web-based interface. And it transmits all it sees and hears back to its master. It’s essentially a video camera, a webcam, a still camera, and a telephone – on wheels. The only difficult part is putting it together, and even the Russians can manage that.”
From the couch came a series of alluring bleeps and squeals. It was almost too much for Mr. N to bear. He must get rid of Hargreaves and hold her again. “Tell the Directorate to form a commission to inquire into the feasibility of holding an inquest. And go down to Carnaby Street and arrest a few hippies. A good kicking in the basement cells and they’ll tell us whatever they know about this robot.”
“But sir, Carnaby Street hasn’t been cool for-”
“Do as I say!” Hargreaves scuttled off, pulling the door closed with a round thump. Mr. N exhaled and returned to the couch, falling into his lover’s smooth white arms, staring into her inscrutable black face, feeling the unyielding firmness of her body beneath him.
A robot spy? Here? What will those fools dream up next?
