What are these “desks” of which you speak?

In these crazy, hectic, whiz-bang times of mobile computing, I think we tend to forget how awesome it is to have one designated spot for our computing life. Sure, being able to buy a $7 coffee drink from some snotty barista whose toughest part of the day is remembering if you said you wanted whole milk or skim, then having to stand there and wait forever for a table next to a free power outlet to open up is an unbelievably good time, but let’s not take for granted all the wonderful things you can do at your very own desk.

For instance, you can carve your name into it with a pocket knife! How’s that for personalizing your home work space? Need a place to hide from your significant other when the person you’re seeing on the side calls your house after you SPECIFICALLY told them not to? Just dive under your trusty desk! Handy, huh? And where else are you going to display all your action figures? A shelf? Dude, that’s just creepy. But when you put them on a desk, they become totems of inspirational power!

Not to mention the fact that when you sit behind your desk with your eMachines AMD Dual Core Desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium powered up and ready to go, it looks like you’re doing “important work”, even when you’re goofing off at home. You could be watching a movie on the 16x DVD±R/RW Supermulti drive or listening to music stored on the 320GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive, but as long as you rub your brow and sigh every once in a while, there’s no way anyone could catch on to your clever scheme. You think using a computer from a couch give you that kind of luxury? Wrong.

Yes, laps have become the new workstations for many of us, but don’t count out the stalwart desk just yet. After all, it’s going to be pretty hard to barricade your office door with your lap when the zombies finally come, isn’t it?
