Our friends are always going on and on and on and on about the new ways we listen to music now, like they’re dictating a trend piece for a small-town newspaper.
“Oh, I use Pandora, I can stream almost anything I want to hear.” Or “oh, my whole audio collection is in the cloud now; I don’t hardly keep any physical media in my house anymore.” Or “no one listens to an album from beginning to end anymore! That’s the old model! Randomness is the new coherence! Shuffling is the new composing!”
OK, great, whatever. But then you know what they try to pull? They tell us we “have to hear” this new track by whoever-the-poop they’re into right now—and then they play it on the tinny, tiny, terrible speakers on their MacBook Pro. Or worse—their phones.
Or else they listen on earbuds! Yeesh. Who cares that you can carry around a jillion songs in your pocket these days if they’re all going to sound like crap?
