No Wonder College Students Today Are So Soft
Back in our time, college was tough. We didn’t subscribe to this nonsense about “everyone should get a higher education,” no sir or ma’am. We understood that not everybody was college material. If you couldn’t hack it, you failed out, and nobody mollycoddled you along to make sure you got all your homework done, and your schedule wasn’t too overwhelming, and you weren’t struggling with homesickness, and boo-hoo-hoo-hoo-etc.
And we for sure didn’t have all this technology. Everyone with his own laptop! Outrageous! We had a computer lab. You don’t even know what that is.
It was a little room with a few computers in it, and when it was time to write your term paper, you went down there and hoped there was an available terminal. If they were all taken, you were S.O.L., and that was the way it was.
And don’t even get me started on entertainment. College kids these days watch DVDs on their laptops right in their own dorm rooms! Roommates can even watch different movies at the same time! Ludicrous! Back when we were in school, there was one student lounge with one television in it, and if you wanted to veg out, that’s where you’d go, and if you wanted to see the late movie but someone was already watching “Headbangers’ Ball,” you had to knife-fight him to change the channel!
There was this one rich girl whose room was on the floor above ours, and that place was like the pleasure-dome of Kubla Khan because she had one of those tiny VCR-TV combo units and a worn-out tape of “Blood Feast.” We watched it approximately seven thousand times over the course of two years.
Other nights, if we wanted some entertainment, we just had to binge-drink, and streak the quad, and rally for Clinton, or against Clinton, I don’t remember, and condescend to “townies.” That was fun for us. It was all we had.
Just imagine being away at school now, and able to watch any one of these twenty-four movies on DVD in the privacy of your own room! Whenever you want! It seems so decadent!
And a few of these movies are even good!
