640×480 The Terror
Troy Kendall awoke under a heavy sheet of clear plastic. “What… where… how did I… where am I? That light, so… so bright… ” A blinding white light was projecting upward at him, through the glass he was sprawled on. Looking anywhere near it was like jabbing Troy’s brain with a white-hot drywall screw, making his slashing headache a thousand times worse.
He thought of his wife. “Daphnia? Daphnia?” Troy tried to lift his head up, but the blanket of plastic kept it pinned down, and would only give so far. Now he felt a little frightened, and then a little silly. It’s just a stupid dream. He tried to will himself awake.
And couldn’t.
Panic set in. Troy tried to think clearly, to reason out his situation, but wild animal terror lunged within him. How does an ordinary, average ecommerce product buyer wind up unconscious on a huge glass platform, wrapped in plastic, in the glare of some kind of subfloor spotlight? Had he gone to a nightclub and passed out? Daphnia had really gotten into the dubstep scene, but he was more of a jazz fusion guy…
Then something in his memory faintly whispered. Then it murmured, then it mumbled, then it kind of talked in that way you do when you want to be able to say you’re answering somebody’s question but you want to force them to ask you to repeat yourself.
The Carson Optical zPix USB Digital Microscope. Some product sample left by a sales rep. He’d looked it over for five seconds and, with a snide laugh, set it off to the side in his junkpile, right next to the USB Pet Rock and the sudoku toilet paper. And then Troy remembered what he’d said. “A USB microscope that displays the image right on your computer screen? Why the hell would anybody ever want that? It might work with both Mac and PC but I swear, some of the stupid ideas people come up with… ”
Was it possible? Was he somehow pinned under a coverslip on a slide in the Carson Optical zPix USB Digital Microscope? He tried to comprehend the possibility as his mind did the mashed potato in confusion and terror. Without realizing it, Troy was thrashing around now with all his might. He managed to push the plastic sheet further up than he had before, and he was finally able to look around.
What Troy saw shattered him.
A giant white cylinder in the middle distance… printed with what was, unmistakably, indubitably, unquestionably, a giant sudoku puzzle.
