I tell you what, it’s not the America I remember.
I tell ya it’s just not right! Those fatcats on Wall Street are collecting their bonus checks like nothing ever happened while good, hardworking Americans are still picking up the pieces of their shattered lives and just now starting to find work. And now on top of it all it seems like Barnes & Noble is slowly going the way of the buffalo.
I remember when I was a boy and the first Barnes & Noble megastore set up shop at the South end of town. Seems like just yesterday they were putting ol’ Jack Hanegan’s bookstore out of business. I remember Dave Sisk’s little music shop closing their doors not long after. Seemed like everywhere you turned that little 4,000 sq. ft. book-sellin’ monolith was carving out their niche in town: coffee shops, comic book stores, the little breakfast nook Betty Dehn used to run down on Timber Avenue. It was a different time, by gum.
No use frettin’ over it I guess. This will be our generation’s “good ol’ days,” the days when greedy cities fell over themselves at the thought of a tax boon and invited huge corporate monoliths into town to kill all the local business, only to feel some bizarre sadness when the huge corporate monoliths were replaced in a similar fashion.
But at least I’ve still got my refurbished Barnes & Noble NOOK eBook Reader with 3G & WiFi. It harkens back to a simpler time, when a man’s handshake was his word and good ol’ Mr. AT&T would let you use his 3G coverage and WiFi hotspots for free. I used to browse and download magazines and newspapers and books on that very Barnes & Noble’s WiFi. Oh sure it’s not a fancy COLOR NOOK, but I never was much for pretty pictures. No, give me the simplicity of adjustable fonts and E-Ink displays and some random elevator-music sounding smooth jazz over the speakers as I sit under a huge shelf of discounted “pretty kitty” calendars reading a Muscle Car Monthly magazine.
I sure am gonna miss this place.
