Music Monday: Songs About Home

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! This is the time of year when people start finding their way back to the place where they began, or the place where they feel they most want to be. Scott's made a playlist of his five favorite songs about home. Here's the first:

Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place

When you feel safe, when you feel like you are where you belong, that's what it's like to be home. That's also what it's like to be in love, which is something David Byrne explores here. Yes, it's a little naive to speak about forever (you'll have to open the front door at some point) but one's home is one's castle, and every castle has a special magic of its own, right?

Go get your home boys and home girls and rush on in, after the jump we've got four more songs and last week's Spotify list. See you there...

Before we head inside, remember our new Spotify playlist will be featuring a great selection from last week's Music Monday comments. The theme of the mix this time is Musical Joy and it'll fill you with Glee! But before you start reminiscing, check out our current Music Monday below.

Iggy Pop - Home

Iggy is often thought of as edgy and dangerous, but these lyrics aren't really either. A person needs a home? Life is hard and family is important? Face it, haters, even the darkest of punks needs someone in their lives now and then. Home can be anywhere, after all. Just because it isn't yours doesn't mean it isn't someone's.

Dionne Warwick - This House Is Not A Home

Nothing I can add that Burt Bacharach hasn't already written. Home isn't just about a physical place. Home is about the memories and the history and the people and, yes, a few of the things. But things can be replaced or forgotten. A home can only be left behind, maybe with hopes of returning one day and finding everything important just the way you left it.

The Rolling Stones - Moonlight Mile

If you've ever taken a trip back to some place you remember, you know what it's like. Those last few miles, when things go from strange and unusual to vaguely familiar. Maybe that old shop closed and maybe the mall's a little bigger. Maybe there's a Pizza Hut across from your elementary school or maybe they took out your favorite playground. All your sweetest memories are there at once, because you know there's just two more lefts and you'll be pulling into the driveway like you did a million times before. You can't go home again, but you can always revisit the old neighborhood, and this song reflects those sweet memories when you hit that last, unforgettable mile.

Simon & Garfunkel - Homeward Bound

And, finally, the most important part of a home: it gives you something to dream towards. Once you know where your home is, everything else is just travels. It's fun to be a tourist or a visitor, but home is home, and there's no feeling greater than knowing you're headed back to the place where you really belong, and really want to be.

If you're feeling homeless, remember, you've always got a place in our Turntable.fm room for the regular Music Monday enjoyment. Also, let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use.
