This looks pretty nice, but if I am going to spend $155 on a monitor then I might as well throw in a little more and get a brand new one with a full warranty.

Here's a little info about the LCD(I'm sure most of this has been posted throuhout the last four pages but...)
1. This monitor has HDMI and it looks like it has HDCP also, therefor it can be connected to anything that sends a signal out through HDMI(xbox 360, satellite boxes, cable boxes etc)

2. This monitor has 3.5mm Audio Input jack. This is great if you are using VGA or DVI to HDMI adapter and want your sound ran through the monitor.

3. This does NOT have an Audio Output jack. This may not matter to most but if you are planning on running something through HDMI and you don't the built in speakers are going to cut it, that might be a problem hooking up external speakers.

4. No DVI? No problem! As already Stated many times HDMI=DVI+audio. So if you want to use DVI, buy a DVI to HDMI adapter or a DVI to HDMI cable. They are fairly cheap.

5. To the people saying that most video cards don't have HDMI. This is true, but it's not that they are hard to find or very expensive, people just choose not to buy them. I know a few weeks ago Tigerdirect was selling a xfx 9800gt that had 1xHDMI and 1xDVI

Hook up a standard 3.5mm cable to a y-adaptor with both ends female, into which goes the L/R RCA plugs from your audio/video cable.

Here is that part, for your convenience:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I98ZM8

EDIT: Oh, if you don't want to buy weird parts like the one above, I guess it makes sense to buy a standard Y cable (2 female RCA - 1 male 3.5mm) ... this would eliminate you having to buy a separate 3.5 mm cable, such as what you would hook an ipod to an auxiliary port with. Those cables these days seem to be stupid expensive due to the popularity of mp3 players. But Y cables are still cheap : P

Here is that proper Y Cable:

Only real questions are what is the policy for dead pixels on this monitor and do you get a warranty backed by HP or by some fly-by-night refurb center.

Wouldn't the woot 90 day warranty cover that?

EddieAngel333

peepingdan wrote:For those of you freaking out over the lack of DVI... you can stop now. It's a simple adapter. In fact, here's a nice DVI to HDMI cable for cheap

also remember that the cable will not handle the audio transfer

you will have to hook up the audio separately

but then who really uses the speakers on the monitor

Will the warranty cover a single bad pixel?

ottoburgess

wow. this is my first time to add a comment, and i don't have any jokes, sorry.

i do wonder at how many referbs of these hp monitors de-branded or otherwise. what does that say about the quality?

i guess it is so cheap it is worth the risk.

EddieAngel333

ALSO you can buy a NEW Acer with a THREE YEAR WARRANTY with FREE shipping from Tiger direct or NewEgg for the same price or very close to the same price

mostly all makers are dumping their inventories right now for the new stuff coming out

i.e. LED backlit LCD's and in the near future OLED Screens

that's a BIG NO

that's most likely why it was returned in the first place

most of these were probably returned for bad pixel problems

although I heard that the HP's had bad rendering engines

i.e. screens going pink after they heat up after a few hours

do the research on HP monitors

personally I think they are Boggy Old Creature's LOL

I just bought an Acer last week for $139.99 with free shipping
it had a $10 dollar off coupon is 1080p with all three connectors
with a three year warranty
here it is:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009157

wow it went back up to it's regular price and the free shipping is gone
but you can still find great deals out there and remember you're buying new !
with full warranty's not this refurbished Crrappola !

good luck my fellow Wooters !

and remember for a few extra dollars you get NEW with a FULL warranty !

after all it's a long term buy, you'll be using this for years to come

do you really want to place your faith in a Refurbed HP Boggy Old Creature ?

buy NEW my friends for what maybe $10 or $20 dollars more ?

Woot Onnn... !!!

BTW here are some links to buy NEW ! most with FREE shipping !

This would be a perfect addition to the bedroom...but reading through these comments I don't think I want to risk a refurb'd HP. Thanks, but no thanks.

Regarding the bad pixel question. All manufactures are allowed a percentage of bad pixels per square area. I don't remember the exact units, but I'm sure of the fact. If you buy new most manufactures will cover bad pixels as a gesture of good will. But its not mandatory if they fall within the allowed area.

I'm in for one. My netbook and xbox360 both have HDMI output, so I reckon I can use it as a supplemental screen for both of those when the wife has our main TV all tied-up watching her silly shows. Heck, I could probably even use it as a second TV in the living room if I get an adapter so I can run the cable TV signal through our dusty VCR. Having 2 TV's when I don't want to watch what the wife is watching is better than fooling with PIP. This way, we'll still be in the same room "spending quality time"!
…Uh-oh... I just realized I didn't get her approval before I bought this...boy will I have some ‘splaining to do when this shows up on the doorstep...

you are right ! but only on NEW buys !

and most online E Stores will not take back a new monitor for bad pixel problem unless they meet the universal DOA pixel standards

mostly you are only going to be able to take back a "NEW" monitor to a brick and mortar store i.e. Costco, Bestbuy, etc. for one or two stuck or dead pixel

and no one takes back REFURBS for pixel problems unless they meet the universal DOA pixel standards

It's an HP Monitor that they no longer want associated with their name. I've got 2 at work and they are actually quite nice monitors.

Yes, it looks like an HP.

Yes, it is refurbished.

Yes, it works as both a TV or a Monitor.

Yes, DVI with a HDMI to DVI converter.

Yes, some of you shouldn't have internet
access and should find the Bestbuy receipt for your computer and return it before you hurt yourselves or anyone else.

Yes, I wouldn't buy a refurb HP anything.

One caveat to the DVI-to-HDMI converters: HDMI is only electrically compatible to DVI-D (digital only) and DVI-I (digital and analog), not DVI-A (analog only). Here's a description of HDMI/DVI compatibility and a picture of the different DVI connectors to ensure that you don't have a DVI-A connector (in which case you can not convert to HDMI, only to VGA)

dbsidney wrote:Exactly my point! Even HP, a well-known computer company, doesn't want their name on such a lousy product! Instead, they'll "re-brand" their warehouse full of defective TV's and ship them out to the highest bidder - in this case, Woot!

Having worked for "like" manufacturers.....You can sell a refurb at a certain price "branded".....

But at this price....You can not sell a "branded" version because of the supply chain that HP has thru "distribution" and "dealer" bases.....They would have to provide "rebates" to those people because of contractual "price" protection type of clauses....I would assume!

Taking the brand name off of the unit frees them up to "grey market" inventory that either they took back from the "Circuit City's" of the world...other forecasts that fell thru....and units that came back under service.....

I am sure they are just trying to break even or make small percentage on these.....

They just want them off the books!

Question: are there any similar monitors _without_ HDCP? Or do they come at a premium?

Thanks in advance.

you are right there !

HDCP only correlates to 1080p AKA BLUERAY

HDCP is not even used for 720p

so basically unless you have a BLUERAY player HDCP is a mute problem

BTW most HD content broadcast is 720p
although some stations and internet content providers like Netflix are starting to broadcast in full 1080p

and to tell you the truth they say mostly the eye cannot really tell the difference of anything higher than 720p / 1080p is just a gimmick to sell you something perceived as something better !
what really makes a difference is refresh rates, contrast ratios, and the brightness the way the LCD is iluminated

LCD is a dying format
the future is OLED when the price point for OLED comes down LCD's are out
they are also working on laser based monitors / TV screens

not for a novice LOL

ummm just teasing you

it's pretty easy

desk mounts are really easy

wall mounts you have to find the studs behind the drywall or plaster to screw the mount to
you will need a stud finder

egrotron makes a killer desk mount ! they are pricey.. and you can have dual monitors or single
all you need to do is shop around for the best price
here is a link to egrotrons site so you can see it !

http://www.ergotron.com/

here you can get it for $110 shipped

Isn't it the same? After dealing with HP I think a fly-by-night might be slightly more concerned about customers.

this is a FAILD HP monitor

and have you asked yourself the one MAJOR Question ?

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY RETURNED HP Boggy Old Creature's

HP IS CRAPPOLA

why buy a refurb when you can buy new for the same price with a full warranty ?

This a TV?or a monitor for a computer? in the description it appears to be a TV, but the title has it as a Monitor?
