Yes, you are right. Don't know why I didn't think this through. Followed the link to the MythTV wiki, saw a mention of software encoding and ran with it. However some people are mentioning this only records video at 480p so there is some scaling going on with recording higher resolution sources if this is the case.

Should have known better :/ Original post changed to reflect your corrections, wouldn't want to mislead anyone.

i really don't watch what people concider the good stuff. LOL i just want my comedey central and my discover - sy fi - history - true tv and that kinda stuff.

I have been given a cool box that has a 250 gig hard drive in it but I have not tried to hook it up yet. I don't really know what it is actually, I think its a recorder and dvd writer. but I doubt it will decifer the signals for me.

this is so frustrating!!!! isn't there a book you can buy on how to jam the damn system? LOL I am paying WAY too damn much for terrible service, i would think it would be fair me to just pay my high A$$ internet bill ad get my TV free.

I know how cable started and I know how they Jack us all out of seriouse change. I don't have a problem with bending them over for a second.

If I have stuff on my DVR that I want to get off it, can I hook the A/V out from my DVR box, into the A/V in on this and have a copy on my hard drive?

There is something precious on my DVR, which hasn't been feeling too well, that I want to get onto my hard drive.

does this tuner work with hd-ready monitors?

I had an old Hauppauge PCI card I used for recording, but no room for it on my new PC. Can this be used to record from say an old video camera or VCR (anything with composite [y/r/w])?

Not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but would I be able to use my universal remote instead of the stock one? I can't find any info on if it's IR or not, and the photos don't to appear to have a receiver. If so, any idea if it would work with Eventghost or another program so I could use this as my remote receiver for Boxee? Would be great to get a tuner for recording and an IR receiver to use with Boxee all in one for 24.99.

i see on youtube that this product seems pretty good for the folks that want to record their game play. it does look like this can out put more than 30 fps but i would just like to be sure. what is the maximum resolution this outputs when playing xbox 360 or watching tv?

also some people are saying the max resolution for recording is 720x480 and some saying it can record in hd. who is right?

i know im gonna be using composite connecting to my 360 but what is the highest resolution it can display and or record at? most importantly what is the frame rate output?

again this does seem like a product that would indeed work FINE for recording game play. i just want to be sure of what anyone has to say or help.

i left fraps on when i started to watch tv and it was giving me a solid 60 fps and if your using composite cables then the highest resolution would be 720x480, but if you record a hd show from over the air then it will record hd.

Just so I'm clear on this:

I go to antennaweb.org and put in where I live. It gives me a list of stations being broadcast digitally over the air. I can use this device's included antenna to pick up any stations from that list that are yellow. To get any other colored station, I have to purchase a separate, larger antenna?

If someone could just let me know if all of that is correct I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks!

Hulu.com

It's free.

No Wild Wild West, but there is a Clint Eastwood collection up apparently.

Here's the availability for SGA, off the site...

Hulu is able to offer 10 full episodes of Stargate Atlantis at a time. Each set of 10 episodes will be available for three months. Season 5 Episodes 11 through 20 are available through December 2.

Kinda leaps into the vacuum that they don't have the full series available, unlike SG-1 which they have pretty much every episode of every season. I watch SGU on there as well.

Also... I bought one...

I have this device. Summary: For $20, it's an awesome deal, since I'm pretty happy with having spent $60 for it (granted, like 2 years ago).

Most questions seem to have been answered, but my summary:

1) Gaming: I played through most of Odin Sphere using a PS2 connected through this to my laptop when I was waiting for most of my stuff to arrive during a move. It's a Core Duo 1.86 GHz (not Core 2 Duo), and it worked fine. I didn't notice any lag, which isn't to say there wasn't any--Odin Sphere isn't exactly the most demanding game on precision twitch reflexes. However, occasionally the sound, oddly enough, would lag by a noticeable amount. You don't need an ATI video card (I have one, but this device doesn't care).
2) HD Recording: As others have pointed out, since Composite and S-Video cap out at SD resolutions, you can't record HD on those inputs. However, you can record at least 720p HD over the coax input (input from the antenna, cable box, DVD player/VCR, etc.) I verified that I had an old 1280x720 recording from this device. I don't know if it supports 1080p, and I'm not sure where you'd get the signal from, anyway.
3) OTA Signal Quality: There are online resources (www.antennaweb.org) that can tell you where your local stations' transmitters are. If they're more than about 15 miles or so away, I wouldn't count on being able to pick them up with an indoor antenna like this one.
4) Cable: If you subscribe to cable/satellite, you should be able to take the output of your cable box and route it to the coax input on this device and watch/record it on your computer. If you stop subscribing, you will no longer have this ability (though over-the-air broadcasts will still be available).
5) Recording Games: No idea whether you can go over 30 fps on a game recording, but why would you need to? For playback/passive viewing, 30 fps seems like plenty.

I think that covers most of the common questions I saw.

Does this work with Windows 7?

One other thing: 720p recordings are approximately 4GB per hour. I haven't kept any SD recordings to compare the file sizes.

The delay between button presses on the controller and results on the screen would be so great as to make it unplayable in all likelihood.

Is there a video output to get it onto my TV? Does it require internet? Can I using in a moving vehicle, like my pirate ship (considering I also have a broadcasting antennae nearby? Thanks

The antenna color ratings are just suggestions. Nothing is a sure bet. I don't know if the included antenna is strong enough to qualify for a color.
If you're in the market for an antenna, this article may be worth a look:
Antennas Compared

It may be worth a try to make your own antenna if the included one doesn't work well enough. You can make one out of coat hangers. I have a homemade antenna similar to a channel master 4221 in the attic. It's made out of a 2x4, copper wire, screws, and a balun (matching transformer). It works great for free tv over red an blue ranked stations from about 17 miles away. Google should be able to help you for more TV antenna building information.

I also own one of these. The video quality of basic cable is not that good once it's blown up to 1080 size but the ATSC (OTA) HD looks rock solid. I have one of these hooked up to my HTPC as an ATSC tuner with Windows 7 home premium and it works flawlessly. A few things though, the software it comes with leaps into the vacuum, throw it out. The remote is almost worthless because the IR receiver is on the side of the device, and has to be pointed directly at it. I used my Harmony to learn the IR commands, and it works well enough. Mine came with a USB extension cable, you will need one if you use it on a desktop. It's a great deal for $20.00. NTSC quality = c ATSC(OTA) = B +/- No QAM!

A quick check on antennaweb shows only 1 lousy channel in yellow, the main network I'm looking for is purple...that means this product wouldn't really help me much, would it?

I canceled my cable and am using a dedicated PC hooked to my plasma to watch hulu and netflix instant but I really miss ABC, mostly for Good Morning America.

Anyone know how I can get that?

ABC.com? If it's an HTPC, just play it full screen in your browser. Also, just get an outdoor antenna.

Xeta wrote:So im looking to be able to record Xbox360, etc., footage. Can you just play the gaming console on the TV and use this to record what youre doing, therefore no lag while playing (because the xbox is still directly hooked to the tv)? Im assuming to do that you would need something to send the signal to the tuner. Like another antenna connected to video/audio outs?

If you're using a composite video setup (the yellow, red and white RCA plugs), what you'll need to do is get (or build) a "Y" cable for each line. Xbox goes on the bottom of the "Y", and then the TV and the tuner sit on the forks.

Be sure to consider the male/female ends when you're buying the cables. You might need to get some 6' RCA AV cables and RCA female-female adapters (Radio Shack has these for cheap) along with the "Y" cables to make it work.

As far as cable quality goes - if the cable is put together well, the $5 bargin-bin cables will work just as fine as the $80 Monster shielded cable. The only time I'd use one of those expensive Monster cables (well actually I'd just build my own shielded cable for a fraction of the price) is if there was a high amount of signal interference coming from AC power lines or equipment. You'll have to decide which you require for your setup, but you'll most likely be able to stick with the cheap cables.

ABC.com only shows Good Morning America in short clips which is so annoying it's basically worthless...plus they don't have Oprah or anything else (yes, I'm a girl!)

well, Hulu isn't going to be free anymore next year. and personally, i got this because i want to be able to watch sports events, namely football games when i am on the move, which is very often.

I am trying to figure this out, from what I read and understand you can get only what is broadcast over the air, so basicaly my local channel lineup (which leaps into the vacuum anyhow). So what would be the reason for one of these? I travel alot but every airport I go into there is a tv with cable. If I want to watch tv while I am in my pool, then I will put a tv out there (after I dig the pool).

Micro1331

It isn't the best, but it's good for when your not home and your favorite show is on. I used to own one of these, my roommate still actually does. It is decent quality video, nothing like what you would get through cable or antenna, but it s still fairly decent and watchable. The software included is a bit hard to handle, and can sometimes fail, not work, freeze, and crash. But, the tuner works great in Windows Media Center, so if the ATI Catalyst software fails on you, you could always use Windows Media Center as a backup program. The nice thing abou this is if you leave it plugged in, or with the antenna plugged in, you can set either program up to automatically record one show, or even an entire series. Which comes in handy when you have to work or something and your favorite show is on. The other nice thing is since its recorded you can skip through the commercials and continue on with the show. If you are looking for high quality TV recording, look elsewhere, this is by all means only to record video to watch, not for high quality. (And the attachment for s-video, and Composite connection is about worthless, the quality when recording with those is nearly unbearable.) I bought this brand new at Bestbuy awhile back and used it for what I stated, but I wanted something more so I sold it later. Again, if you just want to record the occasional TV show then this is for you! If you are looking for high quality, keep forever recordings, I would advise you to look at a different TV tuner.

You can record TV through cable, my roommate and I used to do this (he still does). You just have to download the right TV guide for either ATI Catalyst, or Windows Media Center, which can sometimes be a pain. But yes, it does record Cable Television.

EDIT- nvm just reread the post on page 5. I guess I won't be purchasing this.

Yes you can. We have Time Warner Cable here in Ohio and my roommate uses this to record many shows from our cable line. Whoever posted that you can't is sadly mistaken. The only difficult part is making sure you have the right TV guide for ATI catalyst or Windows Media Center (I would recommend you use Windows Media Center). Hope this helps!
