CommunityWootsATI TV Wonder USB Digital HDTV Tune...

YouCantWootThis wrote:you should hate the player, not the game.

The ATI software definitely leaps into the vacuum, so keep working on the setup to make sure you are telling it to use the digital tuner, let it scan for stations, etc.

I found the software to be really cancellation, and not up to what I've experienced in the past. But, eventually I figured most of it out and also got it to work with Vista Media Center on another PC.

You may have trouble, but it isn't woot's fault that ATI programmers are balderah...

k I agree with you but do you think me being in a room with 4 walls has something to do with it?

I forgot to say thanks, bobbyjalota.

THANKS! I tried 2 or 3 different methods of getting win7 to recognize the tuner, and had no luck until reading your post.

Has anyone figured out how to rename the channels in the channel guide so I can use the same channel numbers that the broadcasters use...

I think there's a way to manually add the channels in if you use windows media center

OK, new issue. every time I hit the power button on the remote, I get a message that says "Aecsoft Totalmedia not installed." How did that get in there? How do I set up the remote to work with WMC or ATI Catalyst?

Everything works better than expected... except for the remote. It don't work at all.

Disregard everything that tard said. It worls fine if the remote receptor on the device is where the remote can see it. doh.

Do we have to buy a "IR blaster" for this product to work properly?

I get it set up in WMC and i can preview video and sound, but when i go to finalize it says "IR hardware not detected" yet I can move around WMC using the remote that came with the tuner so obviously its reading that IR.

Please help!!!!

I downloaded all the listed software and drivers everyone posted and I am now able to watch cable TV when I tell it to use analog. I have time Warner and since all analog is gone I think it must just be confused.

Anybody have trouble with an annoying high pitched noise in the background while watching live TV or recorded shows in WMC? It seems to be present on some channels and not others. Running Windows 7 x64 here, analog cable.

There's a way to do that in the settings for WMC. I just renamed a few to the friendly "ABC", "NBC" and so forth. I believe it's in "Configure Your TV or Monitor" in the TV settings (right-click in the guide or while watching tv, click "settings") - I can't currently verify because I'm recording a show, but it's in there! I'm pretty sure you can re-number them too, but I haven't actually done that. I hope this helps!

AHHH!!! Smartpost says mine just tooke 2 days to go from Chino to LA, I know I5 traffic is bad, but I could have walked it faster than that.... and the delivery date has gone from the 18th to the 21st.

YAY Smartpost!!

I just checked my tracking and it says it won't get to me by the 23rd ... is this normal for w00t orders? Not trying to complain but wanting to set expectations right for future purchases.

Received mine, installed it and it receives and records great. However I am having a problem burning to a DVD. Can someone walk me thru the selecting and burning process?

Many thanks in advance.

how do you get more digital channels? i only get about 7 and they stutter very badly making them unwatchable. analog works fine

pcnetwrx

On the stuttering, I see the same thing on most of the full HD channels. All of the channels showing what appears to be SD content are smooth, but then again, I have at least 2 full HD channels that are smooth too. I had been thinking that my laptop was just not up to the task, but this doesn't make sense to me why some would stutter and others would be fine. I wonder if more memory would help in my laptop (currently 1 gig on Vista Home).

So mine came a few days ago, and I am recording stuff on it and all that. It works just fine with vista and WMC, no issues at all. I was hoping someone could help me out though. When I record an hour long show in WMC it takes up about 7GB of memory, I have a laptop and this is a problem. I am recording on "best" quality, so I am assuming that lowering the quality will help save some space, but the files are still going to be huge. I have movies that take up less than a GB of space (around 700 megs), is there a way to compress the files or something, or do I just need to go buy a ridiculously large external hard drive?

Record on lower quality unless you are planning to watch the recodings on a big TV. For purposes of watching on a small PC screen, you can go with a really low quality.

Then get a program that will compress it to h.264, windows media, real media, etc. That will make the files really small and you can delete the original.

Then go buy a huge hard drive because that's less work.

It sounds like a poor signal for the channels that are "stuttering". Digital signals don't get fuzzy when they are poor, like analog does. They pixelate and break up because you are either getting all or nothing.

Is that what you mean by "stuttering?

I want to do that in the ATI interface. Have you tried it there? I really hate WMC and I don't have it on the laptop I useally use with this device.

Thx

Yes, I had that problem on my laptop, which makes sense because there is no insulation between the sound card circuits and the rest of the motherboard. I solved it by muting the laptop and using an external USB sound device to drive the speakers.

My laptop speakers aren't loud enough so I was using external speakers anyway.

I believe that WMC requires a special Microsoft remote. That was definitely the case with XP2005-MCE when I set up an ATI card a few years ago. That remote let you control all of Windows, not just the TV tuner.

I haven't tried it on Vista or Win7 yet, but I assume it is the same way still.

With MCE, you are pointing the remote at teh operating system. The remote control from the tv card vendor is only providing control for their device through their software.

You can thank bill gats for that.

THe only channels you can get over the air are the ones that reach you with a decent signal.

I'm getting all the major networks, and a few stations I've never heard of.

Other than that, you will have cable of satellite.

I'd like to comment on my tuner, but FedEx Smartpost? is stupid slow. I ordered on the 4th and still no product. It SAT in the Indianapolis depot from the 13th until the 17th. For the future, is there some other option other than Smartpost?

I am usually a very patient person, but this is really stupid, I called fedex with no help is site since it actually is being delivered by the US post office. I posted earlier that my bro got his and he ordered his after me and we are getting them delivered to the same friggin place. Mine says delivery date of the 21st, geez.

Ugh!

I received mine yesterday and spent many hours last evening getting it to re-work after it initially worked awesomely.

I have Gateway laptop that's only a year old and it's running Vista Home Premium, 32 bit.

After installing all the software, I attached the stick with the antenna and it worked well with Windows Media Center. To test it, I then set it to record a show in the next half hour. I left my laptop alone and then went back to it an hour later. It didn't record the show and I no longer was getting a signal. Nothing was working so I rebooted. The tuner stick was no longer being detected by the computer. So I uninstalled the ATI Catalyst program and then reinstalled the 32 bit driver alone. Still nothing. I'm guessing it's faulty because my other computers also won't detect the stick when I plug it in. So, I'm exchanging it with Diamond for a new one.

I hope this one works because I'd really like to have a back-up DVR.

Also, does anyone know if WMC will record shows when you have your computer in sleep mode?

attackfrog

Finally got mine, and got it working on 64bit Windows 7 by going into the driver folder in the cd as was described. Works well with Windows Media Center, and the remote does too.

I want to know though, is it possible to use the remote with the IR receiver on my laptop? I have this ENE CIR receiver built into the front of it, and I'd like to attach the dongle to my USB hub and get it out of the way.

The stuttering is very regular on the channels that do it--it's not pixellation. It pauses a bit, then speeds up to catch up, then pauses a bit, ...

It seems more like a horsepower issue, but I just don't get why some channels have it and others don't unless some channels are being broadcast at higher resolutions than others even though some of the good ones are clearly nice, HD signals.

When I get a chance, I'll try reception from a different location to see if the results are consistent. I may also buy some more memory for my laptop.

Mine's still sitting in Houston, TX... Anybody else's stuck there?

miken927

Anybody know what the processor limits of this thing are? My cheapo laptop with a 1.6 AMD64 Athlon (2gb ram) works (under vista home basic and Catalyst Media Center) but stutters as others mention, but my desktop (1gb ram 2.4 Intel) gets amazing signal, side by side... maybe it's the graphics processor -- I don't know what they're running...

jbsoccer333

ok so WMC is recording everything in HD, is there a way to get digital signal without it being HD (I don't think there is). Also, is there any way to make the recorded filed smaller? 7 GB is awfully big for 1 hour of tv.
Catalyst is not recording for whatever reason, although I was able to record some xbox360 gameplay yesterday (it lags about a seconds btw). Anyone experiencing an issue recording on a schedule in catalyst, when I schedule nothing happens.

I was pleasantly surprised. I got mine two days early. I hooked it up to my laptop and it's working fine with wmc. The real test will be once I get home and there's good input to test out the quality of this thing. No disappointment so far though.

I got my tracking number on the 11th and fedex/smartpost still don't recognize my tracking number . I really hope I get it soon.

OK, I understand. I have that happen occasionally on my laptop. I think it's a function of the GPU and/or CPU. I see it occaisionally when I have about 10 browsers, Outlook, etc etc and I'm also driving dual displays. I've noticed that when it happens the CPU is showing very low utilization which is why I suspect the GPU. My laptop is a slow Core2 with an integrated ATI GPU.

I've noticed that when this happens, all of my other applications freeze or slow down for just a second.

Once I close a few dozen browsers it stops doing that.(I usually have multiple instances of Chrome, Safari, and IE running all the time)

I also noticed that it will do that about the same on any station. However, it seems to work harder on the channels with the weaker signals so it will happen there more.

Finally, I have seen this with Pinnacle, ATI, and one other no-name brand of HD stick, so I'm convinced it is the computer, not the HD tuner.

I have 2GB of RAM, and I don't think memory will help.

Remember that the signal is being spooled to your hard drive and then decoded by your PC, so there could be bottlenecks with the various I/O that is going on.

None of this is a problem on my desktop PCs, all of which have more powerful CPUs and GPUs, although the memory is mostly the same.

I hope this helps

Adjust the recording quality in WMC. (Note this is in Windows 7, I assume WMC has this functionality in Vista too.)

From the main menu of WMC:

(Instructions.1) Tasks>>Settings>>TV>>Recorder>>Recording Defualts>>Quality

Alternatively:

(Instructions.2) Tasks>>Settings>>TV>>Recorder>>Recording Sotrage>>Recording Quality

If you want to only reduce the recording of a specific series:

(Instructions.3)
TV>>Recorded TV>>View Scheduled>>Series>>Series Name From List>>Series Settings>>Quality

For a specific program not part of a series:

(Instructions.4)
TV>>Recorded TV>>View Scheduled>>Program Name>>Actions Menu>>Recording Settings Quality

Note that if you changed the default per the first two instructions that will affect all programs unless you change the quality using instructions 3 or 4.

I had the same problem. Bought it 10 minutes after it hit the Internet waves and got a tracking number from Woot on the 11th. After a few days of nothing from FedEx ("No information received"), I contacted Woot service Monday evening. I got a message back yesterday morning saying they screwed up and never shipped it. They immediately canceled my order, much to my chagrin, saying they had no others to send me. The worst part is that they had more for the Woot-off on Tuesday morning (4:30 Tuesday morning, but still).

I'm still pretty ticked.
