In Windows, you'll get a slideshow, but in Linux, you can make it work.

The Intel Atom processors are too slow to both process and display the video simultaneously, but in Linux its ridiculously easy to record a program and then play it back later. I do it all the time on my EEE PC 900 (thats the Celeron one) and it works great.

Does this work with Windows 7? I have a Pinnacle tuner that worked fine with Vista, but only offers internet radio-no TV-when I scan for channels.

USB is fast enough. Uncompressed HD is about 20 mbps. USB 2 is 480 mbps.

This device is supported by MythTV (Linux-based DVR software). I think I may give it a try, but it looks like there's a lot of tweaking involved. For $20.00, it's a nice start though.

My experience with ATI TV junk is that it is that, junk.

I have tried all their stuff since 1998 or so. I still have a few sets of the video cables, the remotes and other things that come with the TV tuner cards.

So I would say pass, not even worth the $20.

It's especially not worth it if you add in the cost of labor expended to try and get the thing to work.

Could I use this to play Wii on my laptop?

ATSC bitrate is 19.39Mb/s, which is less than 5% of the maximum rate supported by USB 2.0.

I think USB can probably handle this.

It has "ATI Catalyst Media Center™" which you could use if you had a version of Windows that doesn't include Windows Media Center. However, not sure if that software would work with Windows 7, or Windows Vista Basic/Home.

Nah, but if you want good USB TV for Mac, try an Elgato tuner; they're usually very well written, as they're specifically for Mac. They can get quite pricey, but if you own a Mac then you clearly don't care about that.

Dunno about this one but my Hauppage USB tuner works just fine recording HDTV.

I have this. Using it to watch TV on my iPhone with the Air TV app.

here is my question:

If i shut off my TV part of cable and give them back all these dvr boxes and just keep my internet on - then i hook something like this to a connection that my internet is also hooked up to and get TV through my computer connection? and also be able to record and all that like I do now with DVR?

I gotta know this - see i am getting RAPEDEVERYMONTH just for basic expanded. and star gate is over now so what's the point?

ya, i use one of these for my digital antenna for windows media center... I run Vista Ulti 64b... i havent had any probs with it. Granted, i only use it for over the air transmission, so i cant say the usefulness of it with satelite or cable. oh ya, i paid 100 for it a couple years back, and i would gladly pay 20 for it now if i had a use for a second...

Exactly what I was going to ask. I'm hoping to be able to cancel my cable service and hook my desktop up to my TV and watch HD TV using this - is that possible?

In for one. I have several Pinnacle HD sticks from Woot that have worked great. I've had especially good experience with ATI TV cards previously, so this is an easy decision.

I'm worried that I will ahve to use Media Center, though. The problem with media center is that it doesn't support sub-channels, which is the biggest product ommission in the history of Microshaft.

Not being able to play sub-channels means that I can play channel 2, but not channel 2.2. Or I can watch channel 14, but not 14.2 or 14.4...

That really vacuums the big one.

I have a quick and pretty stupid question. Does this mean if I hook this up to my PC, I could watch TV without having a tv cable plugged into it?

Also, do I need an ATI video card for it to work?

How good is that antenna? Will it pick up local channels clearly? If there's even a bit of static, it's not going to be worth it. Oh...wait, we're using digital now...no more static, right? (We've got Satellite, and before that, cable, so haven't really had to deal with antennas for years.)

You will not get a cable signal if you shut off cable.

When I shut off cable, they installed a blocking device out at the curb. I could disconnect it, but that is theft and I could go to jail for doing that...

The highest frame size they can record at is 720x480.

Can't vouch for MythTV or ATI's TV application, but Windows Media Center delays the video by a second or more. Playing games with that kind of delay is going to be frustrating.

i just tried this for a project yesterday.. unless there is another way to do it, i would say definitely not. the lag is like 3.5 or so secs between button press and video response. and my computer is very capable of handling the video....
i would def recommend a different solution to that prob, but this works great as an over the air digital receiver... i record many shows using this and media center.

It turns your PC into a poor man's HDTV.

This is a fantastic price. This would be $70-$100 or more at your local electronics store. I just bought one, and you should too!

Windows Media Center supports sub-channels, back from when I was using Windows XP MCE. It has to recognize the tuner as a digital tuner, then when you scan, it'll automatically assign sub-channels. I did this with the ATI HDTV Wonder (OTA), and it worked fairly well in the concrete jungle I am in the middle of.
