Honestly? No. You have more control over the output with your Printer/scanner than with this.

Why on earth would you buy a whole scanner you'd only use once that will give you low quality scans.

Take your photos to Walgreens already. What a pointless product.

I spend too much money here.

Seriously? It can't scan common glossy prints?

I'll stick with my scanner.

P.S. I got a rock

At first I thought "Wha? Another Woot off?", but when I didn't see the strobing lights I realized DUH... it's midnight in Texas.

[face palm] Next time woot..... next time.
-----------------

The only real negative I can see with this product is having to do photos one at a time because you need to load them into the special tray. If you have a large album, it can be very time consuming. I've seen an HP Scanner that has a feeder which will do small stacks of photos in batches, but not for $43.

I feel your pain!(The time zone issue.)

BTW, what time will it be next week this time? What if one lives in AZ or IN or other areas of the country that exempt themselves from Daylight Savings Time? How do you save time anyway? Couldn't we just switch time by 30 minutes and leave the clocks alone? The rest of the world knows our government is nuts anyway!

1. It depends. If you just want a digital copy of a regular photo, you're fine. If you want to have a little more control over the digital copy you get out of it you may be better off with a scanner. A scanner will also scan documents you could then archive/email/fax, this product won't do documents. A scanner can scan at different sizes and resolutions (eg. give detailed close ups of a part of a photo), this product won't do that.

This is a very no-frills, "I only want to scan photos in and be done with them", product you really won't have much use for after you've run out of photos that need scanning.

2. It means it might not be a good choice. I don't own one, so I cannot give you any insight into how glossy photos would turn out.

I've used this model. The results were "meh".

You'll be happier with an HP flatbed scanner, which can do far more, including a fairly decent document to text converter.

And yes, an HP scanner will work on a Mac!

I say we switch the clocks by 37.8 minutes, but let everyone decide which direction to turn it. I'll Spring laterally and you Fall diagonally. :-)

I think woot chose midnight as the time to change products just to give a large portion of the US population sleep deprivation, rather than any economic justification.

Well that's not the Watergate Hotel, it's the apartment section, overlooking the office complex.

I am sure that's why no one mentioned the Watergate Hotel. To be safe, people not in the know could have said "Watergate Complex" and not mentioned incorrect aspects of what's depicted. LOL. So there.

There are two advantages to living in California (Where it was 82 degrees today):

1. Woot changes products at 10 pm.

2. You don't have to shovel smog.

That's right, here in Arizona we don't bother with changing our clocks (except for the Navajo reservation.) Why bother, it's like cutting off the top of your blanket and sewing it onto the bottom and saying you have a longer blanket. That's government for you!

And I'd stick with your regular scanner if you have one. I don't own one of these but a friend does and it seems tedious and not very practical.

Ooooh good one. I didn't think of that. This will not scan negatives or slides. A regular scanner could, but some extra accessory may be needed.

I bought this on 5/15/09 for $49.99 and think its a piece of scaffolding. You still have to crop the little grey holder of. I say it's easier to use a traditional scanner and scan a group of photos at once and cut them out as individual images. So if you have a regular scanned don't waste your time. There's more work involved in using this. If you're not tech savvy and don't know how to use photoshop this could be a god send. Not for me (it's just sitting behind my monitor)...

You don't need to know Photoshsop to edit these pictures. Hell many people may not even have a version of Photoshop. I'm assuming you can use Picasa to crop the scan. If you have Office installed (v.2003 or 2007) you can also just use their Picture Manager application.

I bought it and used it, it is NOT as great as one may think. You can see the boarders and the picture HAS to fit in the holder perfectly to scan it, otherwise it records all the imperfections of the paper: wrinkles, stains, dust and gray holder boarders.
I would definitely recommend looking for something that has at least white blended boarders/holder.
I use MS Vista/Windows 2007 and it takes a while to load each picture individually and set-up for scanning."

Completely agree. My God, this was the biggest waste of money I ever made on Woot and I buy a lot of scaffolding.

The images are lackluster, the software barely runs on current operating systems, the USB interface should be considered shakey at best, and the scanning application is pretty weakly featured.

I threw it away after a week. I didn't even bother giving it away.

Actually, it's like using the same blanket for your bed during both summer and winter but changing how high you pull it up.

For example let's say you use a quilt on your bed. During the summer months you aren't very cold so you only cover up to your waist. During the winter you feel the need to insulate more of your body to retain heat and you pull the quilt up to your chin. Using the same quilt you have achieved different levels of warmth with the same input.

Daylight Savings Time shifts daylight rather than a quilt but I hope you can make the connection.

That being said, most things that claim to be a low tech solution to a high tech problem are bogus. Please 5MP? My digital camera has more than double that resolution. The "USB powered" claim also makes me leery.

kelvin232

not a scanner at all. CMOS sensor means it's a camera But positioned at a fixed focal length for snapping flat, uniform sized objects. Like a camera it "scans" at push button speeds (taking a picture). It's a 5mp digital camera that I can only use to take pictures of other pictures. Yippie!

TheRealSeal

I don't see it saying that it's compatible with Windows 7. I'm sure quite a few people are updating to that now since Vista was such scaffolding. Anyone know if this is compatible?

gstew04

I got one of these last time. Image quality is very good, but the soltware is cumbersome to use and takes a lot of time to do multiple images. Good for the price, I think. Just dont plan on sitting down one evening and digitizing all your old prints...George
