How much did you spend to make that usable? 128MB of RAM? Seriously?

My gosh folks....this is net book, not a gaming machine. I have the 2GB memory version and run Office 2007 on it to handle Power point presentations, 10mB Excel spread sheets and my ham radio interface and logging programs for digital radio use.

3 cell battery last a bit over two hours.

The little machine does great for what it is. If you want a gaming machine...look to spend a bit more $$$$

Be careful. I bought this unit with Vista, a few weeks ago. Random screen freezes. India-based tech support was useless. It was returned in 5 days.

I just purchased one Wednesday at Wal-mart for 248.00, new in box, in your choice of colors.

Well, LOTR was half computer generated video, and poorly done at that. So for that part maybe this little guy would suffice ;)

Costco has the same netbook "NEW" $299.00 with 2 year warranty... $50.00 more for a 2yr warranty is the way to go... Woot you can do better?

$250 for a refurb with a 3-cell battery? I think i'll pass. Wait until Black Friday.

Can the battery be upgraded? And if so will that help the speed?

I have the exact netbook I got from costco for 40 dollars more. It lasts about 1:45-2 hours when surfing the net/watching a movie. Not fantastic, but more than enough for simple use.

About 2 1/2 hours on a good day, less if you keep the screen brightness high or are doing something CPU intensive.

They sell 9 cell battery packs for this model for about $60, though, which will give you 5 1/2 to 6 hours of battery life.

...bought the 10.1" a couple of weeks ago, and just got it. It is perfect for taking on a trip to dump photos, and catch up on email. It is not a gaming PC. The right tool for the right job.

UGH! I was totally waiting for this machine to show up... but not with this processor!

If it were the N series I would have bought!

Hmm

Just need a USB thumbdrive.

As much as I agree with this statement, one must be made aware of the fact that Intel has chosen to not provide specs or a driver to the Linux community for the GMA500.

Check here and here for some well-written and somewhat emotional LinuxJournal articles on the topic.

Come on Intel, make this right like so many other things you do.

I should also mention that Windows 7 runs splendidly on this system. Ubuntu Netbook Remix should work well, too.

Acer aspire 3 cell vs. 6 cell battery

Bought one of the refurb 10" Aspires that was Wooted a week or so ago. Received it last Friday. On Wednesday the hard disk died. Acer said they weren't responsible for service since the unit had been sold to the refurbisher. Awaiting a call-back from them at the moment ...

It says 4 hours...?

I bought this one a week ago:

Great deal with the extras! I am VERY happy with it.

it's not a mid-ranged, it's a bottom feeder netbook. That being said Intel Atom CPU's are worse than a Pentium processor of similar clock speed.

That might be true, but install Unubtu Netbook Edition in one of these and they rock hard. Got one a few weeks ago, hasn't disappointed me yet.

EEEBuntu Rocks

I have an EEEPC 900 that I bought off Woot a few months ago. After struggling with XP, I switched to EEEbuntu and couldn't be happier. The latest version has full control of the ACPI and so can do all the powersaving tricks of XP.

EEEBuntu isn't only for the EEE anymore, so I'd encourage all y'all to put it on your netbooks. It's trivial to get it to set up for dual boot with WinXP for those moments when you need to run winslows.

I tried EasyPeasy as well but found that I liked eeebuntu more.

That's a fairly nasty problem. Ubuntu Netbook Remix really makes these machines work wonderfully, and not being able to use it on the one being Wooted today would be a dealbreaker.

I've got the 10.1" Aspire One from the Woot a couple of weeks back, and I love it - I get 6-8 hours battery life, and it's just enough power to tool around online and program with (and heck, there's even a couple of open source games that run well - I love Battle for Wesnoth). But based purely on the lack of support of GMA500, I'd have to recommend against this bigger one. And that's not even counting that it has a processor with a lower frequency, on a chipset that is Mhz for Mhz slower than the N series.

We have one at my house. It's perfect for leaving plugged in on your night stand. The 3-cell battery doesnt matter to me because I'm not carrying it around the house unless I want to bring it to the porcelain throneroom with me.

Doesn't matter about the lack of DVD drive and such because of the USB, you can add almost anything externally.

Where can you purchase the 9 cell packs? I asked at Staples (where I bought my netbook) and was told they don't carry batteries for them.

I have this acer netbook in the 10.1 size, with the 3 cell battery. I'm somewhat of a control freak so i've timed my battery extensively. I also always run it down to the very last drop. Without using power-intensive programs the 3-cell will last roughly two hours (just surfing the web, typing on open-office). When i'm watching tv shows or movies (on VLC player) it'll only last an hour and a half or so.

I would definitely recommend buying a 6 cell battery or more; it's personally a hassle for me to make sure the battery is 100% charged before i go somewhere because of such short battery life. I would have bought one by now but i keep buying other stuff instead... haha.

Yes, you can get larger battery packs, which will give you longer operating time. Upgrading the battery pack will not change the speed of the system.

Since these are allover the Internet for $171 new, what's the big deal on a used/refurbished one for $16 less?

xiaoyy2@yahoo.com

There is no customs service at all in this company. You cannot return or exchange any purchases even the items are defective. Be careful!

Is this RAM upgradeable beyond 1 GB on this? Is that even necessary? Should I buy this netbook or wait for one running Windows 7?
