drewcp wrote:That only applies to Win 7 STARTER EDITION. You could easily put Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate on this.

You can put it ON this but Windows 7 will never be offered on a netbook with a 11.6" screen. If it has more than a 10.2" screen it will not qualify as a Netbook under any Windows 7 license. See the link that I posted it will show what I am talking aboout. I am actually running 7 on this now as I am a MS MVP so I have the software to test. I also run Vista on a eeePC 900 that I got off of Woot. Yea it is slow, but I got it on there with all drivers working.

I got my netbook on a clearance sale for 250 new. All in all, this one is very comparable.

The one thing that's a big selling point for me that this netbook is missing is that the hard drive isn't a solid state. When getting a netbook, you want something that's going to be convenient and quiet while you're doing whatever it is you're doing - the whirring of a standard hard drive just doesn't cut it. My netbook only has 16gb on it, but for the purpose, it's completely worth it. Then again, I have three computers, so it's not like I need to use my netbook as a storage device.

If you are planning on storing material on it or utilizing it as your main computation device, this woot may be a wise choice yet.

Possible to get this shipped internationally?

If so whats the cost?

I have a friend who just moved to china and his laptop broke...

No one was asking if there WAS a Win 7 Version of this machine, only if it COULD run it. It seems like you're trying to correct me, but I wasn't wrong. Your post provides no relevant info that hasn't already been established. On top of that you're still wrong. If a manufacturer wants to come out with a Win 7 Home Premium Netbook, they could.
"Microsoft's told us all along that it thinks lots of OEMs will ignore the max specs and just ship Windows 7 Home Premium"

Those Rules Only Apply To Windows 7 Starter Edition.

Hmm. Costco.com has the 250 GB model with 2GB RAM for $50.00 more. Think I'll pass.

I have been thinking about buying a netbook... if only this one had Linux on it I would have very seriously considered it...

Even with 2GB RAM the one that costco sells is not going to run as well, due to it having Vista Home Basic vs. XP.

You could very easily put GNU/Linux on this machine.

This 12" 'Netbbok' is getting uncomfortably close to regular run of the mill cheapo laptop territory, but with terrible specs.I can see the value of a netbook but when they get this big, mind as well go 'whole hog' and just get a $400 box that will destroy this.

You can put linux on here, but make sure you get a distro that has a driver for the GMA 500 video chip compiled and working. I have Ubuntu 8.10 on here; there is excellent documentation on the Wiki for that chip. It is actually a Poulsbo product, even though Intel markets it.

Indeed I could (I have it on just about everything else) but I refuse to pay the Microsoft tax.

I got the acer d250 from sellout woot 2 Sundays ago and it's probably the best thing I ever bought from here. I could never tell it was a refurb unless I looked under the netbook for the reconditioned sticker. I got windows 7 ultimate running on it and it runs pretty well. I have seen some moments where it lags a little bit so I recently purchased 2gb of ram so it can run very smoothly which cost me $40 on amazon. And as for the 3 cell battery, I didn't even bother with it so I purchased a 9 cell battery from eBay for $45 since I plan to take this netbook everywhere I go. Worth the upgrades if you ask me.

ATOM Z VS ATOM N PROCESSOR COMPARISON

Refurb for almost the cost of a new netbook? Not a very good deal, IMHO

Mark, with those 2 minor upgrades and at very little cost... You have a gret Netbook...
Well Done..

Yes, but 32-bit only. I would upgrade the RAM to 2 GB first - despite the reduced system resources of 7 over Vista it still uses lots of memory.

For reference, Windows 7 feels faster than XP did on my Athlon 3200+ and 3GB RAM. I think Microsoft did a lot of optimization to make it work smoothly even on older/lower spec machines.

By the way, if you are a student (as I imagine many of you netbook buyers are), you can get a awesome deal on Windows 7. It will only cost you $30-$40 for Win 7 Professional (or Home Premium, but Prof. is the same price and better) - this is a legitimate deal through Microsoft.

Check out the details (as best known) here: http://m.slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1562761

The best deal is to call Microsoft at 1.877.696.7786, and order it through them. You can get a full (not upgrade) activation key through the student deal they have, and they will ship you both 32 and 64 bit disks to put it on whatever type of computer you like. If the representative won't sell you the full version (not upgrade), just hang up and call back. There are several call centers handling calls and some of them are trying to get out of processing the deals. They might send you to the website www.win741.com (where you won't get a full 32 bit license), or refuse to sell the full version. Like I said, just call back to get another representative.

And yes, Windows 7 is the new Mac. ;)

Pass. The 3 cell won't get you anywhere, and the upgrade to a 6 cell will probably cost $80+.

Seriously, what's the point of a ultra-mobile netbook if you can't be away from an outlet for more than 2-3 hours?

Boggy Old Creature x3; Micro Bullet RC Helicopter x1; Philips 5 Outlet PowerSquid x1; Excalibur Electronics Micro Zoomers 2 pack x1; PowerSquid 2 pack x2; Bacon Salt x3; Garrity 8 LED Touch ‘N Lite 2 Pack x2; Philips DVD Player with 1080p Upconvert, HDMI & DIVX x 1; Eton Mini AM FM and Shortwave Radio; ATI TV Wonder HDTV Tuner

For the price, it's a nice deal.

It isn't a Laptop, It's a netbook and that is all they are good for. That is what a majority of the people use their PCs for anyways.

well, if you're at max brightness and going crazy with it. Should last you 3-4 hours typically. Don't set the brightness high and you should be fine to bring it to class, makes a big difference in my Asus netbook.

lol @ dum peepull that don't quite understand that it's called a NETBOOK because you pretty much just "browse the nets, listen to music, and write poetry." I wish natural selection still hung out more, it could have caught you early on in life.

for most people, this is a WAY better deal than a laptop. How many people do you know that do extremely hardware-intensive work on their laptop? not very many, though definitely some. I am a gamer, and so obviously I can't do what I need on this platform, but if you're gonna be using the internet and listening to music, like you said, it's perfect. and let's face it, that's exactly what the average user does. It's also plenty good enough to run anything in the microsoft Office suite, so you're good there. so really, what are you missing out on? just don't go gaming or trying to create movies, and this will do just fine!
And truthfully, I have been looking for an excuse to buy a netbook. my laptop is bulky and heavy, and this would serve its purpose instead.

I have an acer laptop with the crystal eye webcam. It's not bad at all actually. I bought their laptop for between 400-500 in May and it works great. I purposely bought it because I was going to be in Turkey for 2 weeks and really just wanted something to drop pictures on and get on the internet.

I got the 10" on Sellout Woot, I would guess 2-3 hours @best on battery. I would rather have had the 11" but these are very cool. I would be tempted, but I already have 8 computers now. I was very surprized how well XP runs on the Atom. As long as your eyesight is still pretty good, you will like it. IMHO

snackpants

I own an Acer 10.1 Aspire, an EEEpc 900a, a Dell 10v and one of these... and this is the best form factor. I purchased this one for my mother. With poorer eyesight, the 11" screen makes a big difference and the keyboard is a great size. The problem is the processor. For some reason these Atom z570 processors run much slower than the the n270 line. Of all my netbooks my AOD751 runs the slowest of the bunch.

Just know what you're getting yourself into when you buy this.

The Z520 may be slightly slower in GHz but is supposed to run better than the N270. I doubt that you would even notice a difference in speed between the two.

You better pray you never have to call Technical support. Acer has the worst tech support I have ever had to deal with. Do a search on there tech support and see how many people hate them.
