I can get eight if I tread lightly on mine: lowest brightness, toggling the WiFi radio off when I'm not using it and putting it to sleep instead of constantly starting and shutting down. Woot did a six-cell, 1.6Ghz N-series Atom, 160GB HDD 10.1" a couple months back and has been the best netbook I've seen them list for a long time.

Actually Windows 7 is the new Windows. It's MORE of what you've come to expect from Microsoft!

I just bought this thing off Amazon like an hour ago.

Anyone think I should switch them. I mean 60 bucks but double the battery life?

Boris4ka

It's a sweet laptop - http://www.wordplop.com/2009/09/21/acer-aspire-one-review/ but you should really upgrade the battery (unless you plan on using it at your desk).

jjzone

I have this, I am using it right now but I have the 6 cell battery. It is a decent machine but a bit slow because of the 1.33 Ghz Atom processor. I also upgraded the RAM from 1 to 2 GB: very easy to do 2 screws on the bottom is all you have to remove.
Yes it will run Windows 7 but you can't buy one like this with Windows 7. The resolution on this is 1366x768 and the screen is over 10.2" : too much for the classification as a netbook as far as Microsoft goes.

I like the idea of a netbook with a full sized keyboard.

I bought the 10" offered a few weeks ago. Everyone in the house was excited and jealous so this one will be under the tree this year.

It will also be good for my husband to take when he travels. Much lighter than his regular laptop.

In for one!

Ezpcconcepts wrote:I don't know about that.. the 10.1 i got from the wootoff lasted almost 8 hours for me.

If it lasted you almost 8 hours then it DOES NOT have a 3 cell battery. Your lucky to get 2 hours with full brightness while browsing. Even worse if your constantly streaming music or video from the web.

$60 is worth it for the big battery. Without looking, buying this + a six-cell battery off a different site will run you more than $60.

3 Cell. Mini 10v instead of 10. So, newer generation.

Might have something to do with it. Pretty sure my friend picked his up used. Figured I'd ask just to see if I should be telling him to do something about that battery or not.

I'm using the 10" version offered a few months ago, daily! Battery easily does 8 hours regularly while browsing nets. Needs video memory improvement, but for basic interwebs, email, docs, it's been absolutely perfect. Good enough to retire my 10lbs HP 15.4" dinosaur.

I am typing on a 10.1 and I have owned a 8.9 previously.

The 8.9 had a 3 cell and was totally worthless.

My 10.1 has a 6 cell and it can last nearly 7 hours.

I travel a lot and its great for the airplane and its nice and portable.

I have a copy of photoshop CS3 and it actually does run. I use it for very light photo retouching. I have a feeling if I tried doing serious work it would freeze up.

This is going to come off as crass because, well, it is. You're a fool if you're running Photoshop to do 'very light photo retouching' on that laptop. There are a zillion other, much lighter weight applications you can run instead of that bloated hunk of garbage. I also have a hard time believing you bought a license just for your netbook.

That only applies to Win 7 STARTER EDITION. You could easily put Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate on this.

I've got an AAO150. I got about 2 months out of the 3 cell battery. Then it refused to charge and had to be replaced.

Just in case you want a datapoint on how long the battery pack lasts.

I actually own both an 8.9 netbook with a 6 cell and this one with a 3.

Here's the pros and cons of this 11 inch:

Pros:
The screen resolution does not cut off the bottom of web pages and documents. That extra bit of real estate makes a lot of difference, because if you're like me you'll be using it for web surfing and documents. (Typing on it right now, actually. )

Cons:
The battery is definitely smaller than a 6 cell, enough to make you think twice about taking it with you if you're uncertain about being able to plug in within 2 hours. Going to client meetings or hotel rooms I bring the 11 inch 3-cell, going to a seminar where I'm in an audience... I bring the six-cell. The other netbook stays home to act as a low-power bittorrent server.

Toss ups:
CPU: I haven't noticed any difference in the processors. It may be because I took out all of the crapware that Acer puts in their computers.
Size: This is about the size of a piece of paper, the 8.9 is about the same size except if you trim about an inch from each edge. However the 8.9 is of course heavier and a bit thicker. But over all, it's comparing acorns since they are both plenty portable.

Acer blew it with this model. They upped the screen resolution from 1024x600 in the 10" models to 1366x768 in this one. That's a really good thing. And then they put a slower processor in it. A slower processor trying to control a higher resolution screen is not a good combination. If this had a better processor I'd be all over it, but I've played with one of these and it's slooooooow.

It's also noticeably larger than the 8.9" or 10.2" models. Not horribly so, but definitely larger.

Firstly, I LIKE BREAD AND BUTTER! I LIKE TOAST AND JAM!

Secondly, I prefer Photoshop compared to GIMP, Paint.NET, or any other lightweight photo retouch utility simply for the fact that it's what I know best, and what I feel most comfortable using. Photoshop runs perfectly quick on my laptop (Core Solo 1.8Ghz 2.5GB Ram) and it is usable (not using the word loosely here, it really is) for light photo retouching. Hell, or even completing an assignment before class while sitting in the lobby.

Thirdly, I can install CS3 on as many computers as I want to thanks to my university and them extending the usage of their enterprise (I guess?) license to students to do work outside of class rather than tying up the laboratories.

In addition: I have Adobe CS3 installed on both my desktop and my laptop. The EULA that my school made me agree to is that I would only use one copy concurrently, and until they develop the technology that allows me to be in two places at once, I'm pretty sure I'm following that rule.

Welcome to the internet. Don't be so crass next time.

Windows 7 hasn't been out very long. There were never many netbooks that came with Vista. Even if you would have been shopping for a netbook as little as 1 month ago, you probably would have been looking at XP as the included OS.

Joshana wrote:2 hours if you are lucky

Sounds about right for one with a HD. My general experience with netbooks with flash storage puts it at about 2.5 hours. With WiFi on and, say, an external mouse, expect about 60%-70% of that.

We're pathologically obsessed with battery life so mfrs tell us whatever we want to hear - very cheap marketing.
